Detectives Trailed Him for Six Years
in tho Hope of Regaining Lost
Gold, lint Failed.
Charles Beelcr, who robbed the
Wells-Kargo Express company, at
San Antonio, lex., of $50,000 eleven
years ago, is running an engine on
tho St. Louis, nrownsvillo and Mexico
lailroad. He is apparently sutfering
no pangs of conscience over
his crime. The penalty which he
paid for taking the money was five
years in the penitentiary, the court
giving him that sentence on a plea of
guilty.
Heeler Rtole the money while he
was hauling it from the express of- j
fice to the railroad station, in San |
Antonio. He buried it on a ranch a
short distance from the city and then
tie.I into Mexico. lie was wtpturc
and taken back to Texas tor trial
and after lie had pleaded guilty m.un
i confession and led the detective?
to the place where he buried th(
money. Hut he could not rind it
either from mistaking the location 01
having some one else dig it up, and
he was accordingly taken back and
sentenced to five years In prison
which be served.
When he stepped out of prison
two detectives met him and accompanied
him to San Antonio. Heeler
worked at odd Jobs for a time, aim
then obtained a place as fireman on
a locomotive on the Trinity an
Brazos railroad. A detective rode
on every train that hia engine pulled
Heeler wis watched day and night
He went to the St. Louis, Brownsvillo
and Mexico railroad from the
Trinity and Brazos Valley In the hope
of getting rid of the detectives, but
they followed him.
It 1? now six years einee he left
the penitentiary, und until a few
weeks ago "here never was a moment

"When the grand Jury now Investigating
'He sampling of sugar at
New Orleans finishes Its work. It will
he found that the frauds against the
Government there have been going

This statement was made Friday
by an official of the eustoms service,
who declared all the suspected
frauds would b* found in the sampling
of sugar and in the tests which
determine the saccharine contents
upon which the Importer pays duty.

One of the ollicials of the treasury
department Friday said: "The;
troubles of the sugar importers have |

frauds have only started." .
Humanity Demands It.
Strikes and lockouts are a barbarism
which very rarely may ho excus- I
' ablo but which should never he re
sorted to until every other method of
adjustment has been tried. In the!
Ions run most of these disputes are i
settled by arbitration, and the
average man wonders why this could j
not have been done at the begin- !
ning instead of the end and thereby |
considerable interruption to business j
and untold suffering prevented.
The dispute between the garment j
workers and their employers in Chicago
is one of the worst in recent
years. Public opinion and sympathy
in the matter may to some extent be
divided, but anyone who knows anything
about sweat shop conditions,
the avarice of the men who are responsible
for tdosc conditions and
the cruel advantages so often taken'
i
of immigrant women and girls ignorant
of these conditions, may well!
believe thai the workers have much
cause for complaint.
Hut the saddest thing of all is the
suffering of innocent members of the
families involved. In the homes ot !
the strikers impoverished by weeks j
of idleness five hundred children
have been born since the trouble began.
The thought of those infants '
coming into the world at such a time j
and the wretchedness, suffering and i
sorrow it all means arouses the sym- 1
pathy and indignation of every lover

of the slaughter of the infants in the
little town of Hethlehem 1900 years
ago, and yet in this Christmas season I
of peace and goodwill, infants are
being slaughtered in the homes of
Chicago because people will not

The substitution of a lower-case
letter "c" for the letter "o" In an
advertisement In the Sioux City,
Omaha and local newspapers has
caused John C. Trothers, a grain
'merchant of Nellgh, Neb., all kinds
of trouble.
! Trothers, wishing to replenish his
supply of oats, concluded to advertise.
Writing his advertisement on
a tvnewrlter. he manifolded it and
'Bent copies to the newspapers as follows:
"Wanted ? Delivered on track at

Fatal Wounds.
With a knife blade stuck in bit;
right lung to a depth of four inches,
and still protruding from the wound,
John Davis, a well-known citizen of
West Asheville, staggered into his
homo early Friday morning and informed
his wife that he had bee*
cut. The injured man did not know
the knife was still embedded in nit
lung until it was pulled out by hit
horrified wife. The stabbing resulted
from an affray between the young
son of Davis and a young man nawed

endeavoring to act as peacemaker.
After the cutting, which is alleged t*
have been done by McMahon, the latter
made his escape, but later wat
captured and returned to Asheville.
Davis's condition is critical.
