new year, and all the merchants and
representatives of other interests are

been serving a term in the State
penitentiary for forgery committed
in Columbia a year or so ago, has

conditioned upon his good behavior.

a series of brilliant social events, so

The Unite 1 States Supreme Court
has recently handed flown an opinion
in an action originating in the
State of Alabama, declaring the

unconstitutional in that the law
makes "quitting" a prima facie presumption
to defraud. The Court
holds "that the law in operation
"furnishes a convenient instrument
"for coercion, which the Constitu"tion
and the Act of Congress forbid,
and that it (was an instrument
"of compulsion to bo used again t
"the poor and ignorant, its most
"likely victims.' " The provisions
and laws designed to secure prosperity
