THURSDAY. JANUARY 5. 1911
At a cost of only $38.50 an Ala-|
bam a farmer produced seven bales
of cotton on three acres of land. I
There is plenty of laud in Horry |
which will do equally as well, if uot I
better, should it be given the proper
fertilizers and cultivation. ,
The banks of Rock Hill are following
in the wake of W Percy
HardwicKc, Cashier of the Conway
Savings Bank, and the hours now are
from 0 am to 8!30 pm. This is but a
repliion of the same old story ?Conway
leads and the balance of the
State follows.
Many couples were cured of an
affection o' the heart r- used by sitting
up 1 tte o' nights, during the
month of December. The Herald |<
wishes each and every one of them I'
a long and prosperous life, with a r
hnti?.-? full of rosebuds to make them | (
happy all their days. 1

According to the Spartanburg Her
aid the people of that city sent ofT
in the two week s j ist prior to Christ - |
mas over $00,000 for booze. To
handle this stutl' required an extra <
building and the employment of |
three men in addition to the regular
force of the Southern Express i
compauy. And yet Spartanburg is 1
the home of the State Anti-Saloon
League.
Dr Oook, the Arctic explorer, is
making a maDly and gallant fight to
regain the confidence and respect of '
his fellow man which he in a rneasvre
lost through his inability to
establish his claim of having reached
the North Pole. While still firm
in his beiief that he was the first to
accomplish this unparalelled feat,
yet he candidly admits the possibility
of having made a mistake on account
of the great hardships, privations
and sufferings he underwent
in his efforts to do so.
\
An unprecedented wave of crime
swept over the country during the
year just closed. From every section
of the country come the horrible
details of sickening murders
both by accident and design. We
don't believe that this deplorable
state of affairs can altogether be
traced to the door of King Alcohol
as fullv as many, if not more, of the
recorded crimes were committed in
prohibition communities, and prohibition,
you know, it is claimed,
prohibits. The question, naturally
arises, therefore, is the world
growing worsen
The Swiss Federal Council has decided
to call an international conference
for the purpose of changingour
fiscal calandar. All writers on this
subject agree that there is plenty
of room for improvement and these
improvements can only be made by
making the change. One of the proposed
changes is to make Monday
the first, day of the* week, instead of
Sunday as is now the case. This
change will be more in keeping with
the Eternal Word of Truth, where
it says that God completed the work
of creation in six days and rested
on the seventh and blessed it.
There is some talk among the rank
and fi e of the Nar! oal Democratic
party, mostly among the "whips",
to drive William Jennings Bryan
out of the party?that is to invite
him to take a back seat. Mr Brjan
may or may not be an astute statesman.
He may or may not be a
shrewd diplomat, but this much is
certian that on three separate occasions
he was given his opportunity
to make good and thrice he failed to
do so; that three times the party
was led to disastrous defeat und< r
his leadership, and now, for his own
good and the good of the party, he
should be relegtled to the rear both
as a leader and an advisor.
Messrs H B and John J Elliott,
two of Bardy's prcminent citiz-ns
were iu Conway Friday and ga^e
the Herald office a pleasant call
r"- |
Peary is having as hard a time in
trying to caDvii,ce the world that
lis is th? OLly original discoverer of
the Noi th Pole, and that there is
nor e other be&ido him to divide the
honors aLd share tho glory; no, roteven
poor Cuff/! as he alleges he had
iu reaching it. His claims have been
doubted by some geographical and
seientilic bodies while others bare
discredited his statements altogether.
And now comes Congressman
M?.sou, of Arakausas, with the
declaration to make it hot for the
Arctic explorer when the bill comes
up in Congress providing for the
elevation of Oapt. Peary to the rank
of Rear Admiral as a lilting Nation's
recognition of his alleged
great achievement. Path to fame
is not always shaded with the bay
and laurel nor lined with roses without
thorns.
