DANGER.
Much has boon written and a groat
deal more thought and said concerning
the deplorable* lack of adequate
me ins of Ugh*in# lire in Conway It
is true that we have a combined
chemical and water engine, which,
in a way, is very good and is some
protection, but It is equally true
that out of reach of the lire well at
th*? Commercial hotel corner and
th i at ihe town hall, the engine is
absolutely useless, except it be for
an ornamental appendage to our
m .nicipal government, by reason of
thM insufficiency of the water suppi;
, or rather no supply at all. We
all appreciate our position and recognize
the great dinger which hourly
menace our property, and ye4,
straDge to relate, v%e are making
but little or no ?.-fT >rt to reduce that
danger to a minimum.
It is also conceded, we have ample
maud is soon supplied with improved
fire fighting apparatus, we are liable
at any moment oT having the
reasons to belie\ e, that unless the desad
experience of seeing the principal
business block in the town laid
iu ashes and thousands of dollars
worth of the people's property go up
in smoke. It will then be too late
to lock the door after the horse has
been stolen, and it will be too late
to provide fire protect'on for property
after that property has been
destroyed by fire. It seems to us
that the better plau would be to anticipate
conII igration, and be prepared
to meet it w'.th adequUe apparatus
when it does come.
Conway has indeed been pbenomiutally
fortunate iu regard to disas-|
trous fires, and while other towns
and cities have been swept and
razed aud devastated by flames Conway
has been spared the sad spectacle
of witnessing its places of business
made v; c .nt by an unwelcomed
visit of the fire demon. But it is
not logical; it is not wisdom, and it
is not even common sense to pin our
our faith to the fallacious belief that,
because, we have escaped so far, we
will escape to the end of time. We
sincerely hope that this might prove
to be the case with Conway, and
that we will never be called upon to
witness the horrors of a configuration
which has been the experience
of so many of cur less fortunate
neighbors and friends. But in this
world of uncertainty, in which the
unexpected most always happen, we
know not. the day, nor night* nor
h iur when oar startled ears will be
siluted with the cry of 1 fire," or be
rudely awakened from our dream of
security by h * clanging of bt lis and
the discharge of firearms summoning
us to the assistance of neighbors
aud friends to fight fire with a
measly supply of buckets and no
water amounting to anything. Isn't
it better to be prepared for just
such au emeigmcy, 10 as to be in a
position to sV>p the flones before
much damage is done? We believe
so, don't you?
The most feasible, the most economical.
and at the same time the
most effective plan for performing
this work that wo have yet seen is
that suggested by Mr S T Sessions,
now a member of Council, some
time ago, which is nothing more or
less than a sand jvpe located in some
convenient place and of sufficient
beigt.. to throw water on the highest
building in town, with hydrants
judiciously placed so as to give tin
greatest amount of protection for
the least expendi*ure of money and
a sufficient quanit.v of hose to do
effective work. Tbis plan has all
the attractive features to make it
popular, and useful if needed, that
could possibly bo adopted. I3y its
adoption ninety nine lires out of a
hundred could be extinguished in
their incipiency and much property
saved.
