BEAUTIFUL WOKD PAINTING.
4 ,. A Preacher Intoxicated With the Glories
of the Mountains.
Tt was a real treat to be in Hen
dereonvllle last week where the
Baptist took possession of everything
except the banks and the post
office, but wo had access to them
through;the window
Hindersjnvilie is a rn juotiin city
? whose altitude is 2,250 feet above
pea level, with a poplation of about
0 000 souls. The lakes and rivers
are majestic and the mountains are
sublime; the crystal springs and
y gorgeous cascades, the beautiful
parks and artistic driveways make
llendersonvillo one of the most ad
mir-il resorts to be found at all.
For the benefit of the uninitiated
1 will suggest that when they desire
a pleasant and jwofitable trip, don't
go to Switzerland nor the great
% Rockies of ihe West, but goto fien

upon those sublime mountains as did
the men of old, and coo temp ate the
majesty of the good God, we are
tremendously impressed and in?^-r
spired. To stand beneath the blue
\ dome of heaven, walled in by the
aged scarred mountains, enthralled
by ceaseless roarings of tumbling
waterfalls and the mysterious whisperings
of the winds which tost the
graceful boughs of chestnuts, laurel,
pino and oak?all nature displaying
its wondrous beauty, we
have an experience, the feelings of
which cannot be forgotten.
It is good for us to turn occasionally
away from the business cares
of a grinding monotony and from
the stagnant atmosphere of the level
lands to those lofty pyramids of nature
and breathe the. fragrance of the
heights. The IJook of books takes
the mountains as expressive and impressive
objects of much instruction.
They speak to us of eternity.
Their perpetual pointing upward bo
(t'od indicates to us our need of
wider horizons and serves to intensify
the infinite patience of a pre
serving purpose.
After the wrathful waters of a sin
avenging God had soaked the earth
for an hundred and fifty flays the
Ark, typical of salvation and the
only inhabited house under heaven
at that time, was allowed to rest
upon a mountain.
Abraham offered his only son on
a mountain. Moses was called from
a ountain path; received the ten
commandments on a mountain; saw
the promised land from No bo's
Peak, and was buried in a mountain
grave.
Jesus Christ preached hi3 greatest
sermon on a mountain; was
transfigured on a mountain: was
crucifi-.d on a mountain, and usceuded
to heaven from a mountain, i
The;r beauty is charming and their
magnificent distance is uplifting.
Bin closing, please allow me a word
aoout the progress of the Baptists
of North Caraiina, whose State convention
was recently held at Hen
sonviile, that State Every repori
was gratifying in that every institution
and every branch of our denominational
industry were shown
to be in a healthy and flourishing
condition.
Indeed, when we catch a glimpse
of our 224.000 white Baptist and
multiply this number by two to include
the negro Baptists, making a
total of 418 000 "white Baptist-." in
North Carolina, it looks very much
like the whole land slopes toward
the creek. I
. It was a great pleasure to meet,
my honored and distinguished friend
Mr B G Collins, of Conway.

Dear Ed tor: Will you please allow
me space to ask a few questions
concerning the road laws?:
1st. lias the Legislature passed a
n?'w law in reference to the princi
pies of working, and paying olT, the
public roads? If so, the writer has
not seen it, nor has hear 1 any talk
of such a law until the bond bill was
defeated.
" d Is it not lawful for the County
Supervisor to furnish each road
overseer a special blank to make out
} his report on?
J/ 3rd. Is it not also lawful to furnA
isheacb overseer with blank receipts
to deliver to his hands who merit
them?
4 h. Also, Is Ihere a new law enacted?
If so, when did it become
operative? Is it not ample tine
that each < verseer should have had
a copy of it from the Supervisor?

says he has received none of these
things and neither did he receive
ythem last year and that he knows
not what to do in regard to these
matters.
I have worked the lawful time rn
the road, so my overseer says. I am
not going work it six more days for
the year 1010, neither am 1 going to
pay $.'100 for a receipt from the
county under the circumstances, unless
I do it on the gang or behind
the bricks.
What think vo oi these matters?
Respectfully,
BP Watts.
