Defective flues are one great cause
of tires, aud care should, therefore,
be taken that each and every chimney
in the house gets a thorough
cleaniuc before the cold weather seta
in for good. All necessary repairs
should he made now.
It should not be Inferred, howwvfvr,
that faulty chiuineye are the
only causes of useless fires; others
might be mentioned, such as kindling
a tire with the help of kerosene,
or worse yet, with gasoline,
and the careless disposition of
matches and lamps. A lire chief
who has had occasion to study tho
errors which are committed by the
average person when handling kerosene
and gasoline, and as a result
ways that the following facts and
precautions should bo borne in mind
by the users of tho explosive:

of this vapor is needed in mixture
with air to produce an explosion.

and even burnt to death, by the

Above all remember that the refilling
of a lamp without having hist
extinguished tiio light is a very dan
gerous practice. When two-thirds of
the contents of a lamp have bemi
used up, the remaining third should
be filtered through a strainer or
piece of cloth in order to remove all
particles of dirt whb-h may have settled
on the bolloin of I he bowl. The
char should he removed from the
wick of the lamp every day. A half
used-up wick should always he replaced
by a new one. A lamp oared

Tho law in Alabama, Georgia,
North Carolina and a part of South
Carolina may bo dry, but tho dry b<dt
is limited to tho law, not to the people,
according to the report *he revenue
collectors in these prohibition
states made to their chief at Washington.
Those reports are fairly steeped in
liquor. They toll not only of "booze '
being made but of tho sale, both in
small and in large quantities. In
another month Commissioner of Internal
Revenho Royal Cabell will
make public his annual report, 'n
which he will quote figures furnished
by collectors of Internal revenue
in these states showing the number
of special tax stamps which have
been sold hi the past year.
It. is estimated that In Alabama,
Georgia, North Carolina and a small
part of South Carolina the receipts
from the sale of these spec'al tax
stamps will amount to approximately
$105,000 for the fiscal year which
ended June 3 0 last.
Alabama leads In the number of
stamps purchased. The sale of retail
stamps amounted to approxi

Georgia comes next with a combined

It Is estimated that $16,000 worth
of both kinds of stamps were sold

Again drug merchants were the
heaviest buyers. South Carolina
will show a combined sale of about
$20,000 worth of stamps.

Bag limits?Twenty-live partridges
