Defective flues are one great cause of tires, aud care should, therefore, be taken that each and every chimney in the house gets a thorough cleaniuc before the cold weather seta in for good. All necessary repairs should he made now. It should not be Inferred, howwvfvr, that faulty chiuineye are the only causes of useless fires; others might be mentioned, such as kindling a tire with the help of kerosene, or worse yet, with gasoline, and the careless disposition of matches and lamps. A lire chief who has had occasion to study tho errors which are committed by the average person when handling kerosene and gasoline, and as a result ways that the following facts and precautions should bo borne in mind by the users of tho explosive: JKiret, that a combustible vapor 'b constantly rising frotn tho exposed surface ot a lot of gasoline. * ^Second, that this vapor will iliffufto find spread in all directions for a considerable distance from it* eourcc. Third, 'that a flame, glowing fire or even a tiny spark, will cause the vapor to ignite and Hash hack to the tf-asoliuc proper. Fourth, that only a small portion of this vapor is needed in mixture with air to produce an explosion. Doing so may force the flame down hifo tho tamp bowl, and oh use an explosion, or at the very least may cause the chimney to crack. The proper method Is to turn down tho wick until he Maze Is half its usual size, and then to blow across the chimney's top, not into It. Many children are badly burned* and even burnt to death, by the over!inning or explosion of a kerosene lamp Above all remember that the refilling of a lamp without having hist extinguished tiio light is a very dan gerous practice. When two-thirds of the contents of a lamp have bemi used up, the remaining third should be filtered through a strainer or piece of cloth in order to remove all particles of dirt whb-h may have settled on the bolloin of I he bowl. The char should he removed from the wick of the lamp every day. A half used-up wick should always he replaced by a new one.
