The Democratic State Convention!
f .Nebraska met at Grand Island on I
Tuesday. Amid a tumult of cheers!
from the former followers of W. Jen-j

Smyth of the Democratic platform I
committee, read the result of a test!
vote of the gathering, which practi-j
rally took from Mr. Bryan the Dem- I

which he has sustained for fourteen J
yea if. I
The vote come on a motion made!
by Congressman G. M. Hitchcook, a
candidate for the Senatorial nomina- I

planks with aecom paning speech-!

ihe majority or minority report of J
the committee on resolutions. Mr. J
Bryan, seated as a member of the J
I.ancaster County delegation, was on!
hts feet Immediately with a protest1
and offered an amendment that J
would modify that intent of the or-J
igtnnl motion. The Bryan adherentsI
denounced the Hitchcook motion asl
"gag rule," and their opponents de-j
clared that "individual rule" omsi
?6t prevail. Chairman Smyth ordered
a roll call on the amendment.
When two-thirds had been called
Opponents of Mr. Bryan realized
that he was defeated and a wave of
cheers that drowned the roll call
fcegah.
A.h Chairman Smyth read the re?wlt,
43 G against Mr. Bryan's amendment
to 39 4 in favor of it, the delegates
sounded a fresh volume ol
cheers that seemed to indicate their
relief from the uncertainty that had
existed as to (he strength which Mi.
Itrynn might develop in the Convention.
The original motion of Mr. Hitchcock
was theu adopted.
The action of the Convention practically
prohibits any sjieecta from Mr.,
Itrynn unless, as a member of the
resolutions committee, he should
speak on one of the planks offered1
1hy the committee to the Convention.
The plank in dispute was.
"We heartily approve of the daylight
saloon law and w? commend]
t(ie courageous action of Governor
fih?i|pni?ftiKpr in approving it."
The plank was adapted by a vole
Of 710 to 163.
It was then announced Hint two
minor!l.v reports would he submitted,
One by VV. .1. Hryau and Iho other
by II. B. Flehurty.
That, of Mr. I try an read:
"We favor county option as the
best method of dealing; with the liquor
question."
Th?11 of Mr. Fleharty was:
"Wo. favor local option as now
, provided for by law, hut are opposed
to county option."
The majority plank on the liquor
question, favored by live of the seven
members then was read as follows:
"Wo are opposed to making county
option or any other plan for the
regulation of the liquor traffic a
question of party creed. We stand
for and insist upon strict endorsement
of our present laws and believe
-that any further changes in
qur liquor legislation should he decided
by a direct vote of the people,
and that the cause of good government
and public morals will he better
served in that way than by dividing
the people Into hostile factious
on purely moral issues."
Speeches were made by the spou <?/rs
of the planks, and the Convention
then settled down to the final
tattle.
M?- Urvflii fttirt.-ilt inir t'rum the
platform in behalf of the minority
plank presented by hiui, was greeted
by shoots of applause and was
listened to in silence. He said in
part:

Mr. Bryan here referred to the political
battles he had waged and declared
that -he bad been fearless
when his own future seemed at
otake. Continuing, he said:

About three month* ago "Piov?s>-.:r"
(Joodv/in, a?) alleged palmist,
...ue to Sumter and opened up parlors
on South Sumter street, and for
several weeks did a phenomenal and
rushing business. In the zenith of
his glory he suddenly disappeared,
and upon Inquiry it was learned that
he had relieved Ralph II111, a local
bicycle dealer, of $700 dollars by a
cunnigly-laid scheme. Young Hill
claims that he told him that he posessed
a secret process by which ne
could make money multiply t?y subjecting
it to a certain electrical p,,xcess.
In order to demonstrate that
wonderful power, it is said, he induced
Hill to bring him one hundred
dollars in currency, which roll
he dipped into a bucket of water and
gave to llill to keep until the ne.ii
morning, Hill agreeing not to open
the package until a specified hour.
When the package was opened on
the following morning, lo and behold,
there was the two hundred
dollars in curreucy of the real
money, and Hill fell into the welilaid
trap.
The same afternoon after consulting
with the professor he got together
seven hundred dollars, and off no
went to have that amount subjected
to the same treatment and doubled
in the same inannet. The same .inmersion
in the bucket took place
and another package was handed to
him to be kept until the following
day. YV.hen the last package was
opened, it contained umy u pu-uc vi
paper and Goodwin had flown the
coop. .
Every effort was marie to apprehend
the professor before he got beyond
the borders cf the state, but
all to no avail. Then Hill had circulars
printed Riving the size a.ml
description of the professor, and
i'ering a reward of $100 for his apprehension
and arrest. About a weeK
igo word was received from Bellair,
Ohio, that the officers had the man.
and to send one on for identification.
Hill went and found the suspect
was the man, and he immediately
wired the authorities at Sumter.
Deputy Sheriff Sykes landed his man
in Sumter, and he is now in jail
in default of a $2,000 bond required
by Magistrate Harby. As scon as
his pals arrive, he says, he will be
able to come across with the coin.
Mr. Sykes had every difficulty In
securing his prisoner. He fougb extradition.
and Governor Ansel refused
the Sumter deputy sheriff's request
by wire for permission to emt.irw
pniinsi>l to renresont the slate.
Mr. Sykes employed a lawyer, however,
on his own responsibility, and
had he not he would never have
been able io bring the professor i<South
Carolina.
The people at Sumter are very
much interested in the outcome of
the case, and they want to see the
professor get the limit of tJie law,
but some think as the deputy sheriff
was advised by the oilicials th.v he
belongs to a set of the worst criminals
in the country, it. is more than
likely that, they will come across
with the $3,000 that will put their
mau on the ground.

scapes from death when a covered
launch, owned by the government
and used by the soldiers at Fort
Screven, sauk in l?azaretto creek,
near the fort, late Friday afternoon
while the outgoing tide was rushJiiug
through the creek at race horse
horse speed.
The dead are: Sergeant Olivet,
one of the best known non-commissioned
oilicers in the coast artillerycorps;
a 6 year ohl son of Sergt.
1 Helke. It is believed that Sergt.
Oliver, who is an old man, lost his
life while trying to save that of
the child.
A woman member of the pa?",y
was caught by the tide and carried
down the creek for several hundred
yards, screaming for help until she
lost consciousness. Fishermen further
down the stream heard .her and
put out in boats. She was caught
as she was sweeping by them, hurried
to the bank and after a long
time was revived.
Other occupants of the launch, it.
is believed now, escaped after a bat
tie with the tide. The accldeut occurred
where the Tybee railroad
crosses the creek on a low bridge.
The top of the launch struck the
bridge, the craft careened and was
swept under water In a moment. A
passenger train crowded with pleas
ure seekers on the way to Tybee
beach reached the bridge soon atV?'
the accident. Passengers cared (or
the survivors.
Reports of the accident at Port
Screven sent a detail of soldiers to
the creek In an effort to recover .he
bodies. It is feared the sea'c'i W'l
be very dlflicult as it is problable
the tide carried them out into the
month of the Savannah and possibly
to sea. The survivors, dripping
and suffering from fright, were taken
aboard the train and hurried to
tiie fort. The launch probably is
unhurt and can be raised. *
