For Some Handsome Stores
on Main Street.
BURROUGHS & COLLINS CO.
^ The Store and Office* of this Firm
are to Occup> the [Norman Lot To
l?e the Largcat and llandsom - (
est Building- In Conway.
The contract was made last week
by Burrough & Collins Company for ,
the erectiou of two buildings on
Main Street to be erected on tbe
Norman property adjoining the new
* brick building now occupied by the ;
Kuss Adams Co. One of the build- |
ings, known as the store building, (
will be two stories high, will have a ,
frontage of 50 feet on Main Street ,
and will extend back from tneStreei ,
for the distance of 100 fest. The |
other of the two buildings will contain
the offices and real estate busi- j
ness of Burroughs & Collins Com- .
pany, it will adjoin the store building
on the southern side, will meas- |
ure 27 feet front on Main Street, and j
will extend back for 57 feet.. Tbe }
contract provides for the erection of ,
a large fireproof vault in the ollice j
building and this is intended to take
care of the valuable land papers and
other records of the Company. The
store building will have four rows j
of shelves, one on one side of the 5b
foot space and the other two rows .
in the middle. The building will
occupy the greater part of the space
wnicn is now vacant between the ,
store of Russ-Adams and the pror- s
erty of W. R. Lewis. ;
The business men of the town are (
glad to learn of this move on the ,
part of this large concern, which
has during nearly two decades con- |
ducted the largest mercantile busi- .
ness in ilorry County. Heretofore j
their main business has beei: carried .
on at what is called the "Gully |
Store", which is situited more than j
^ a quarter of a mile from the court- ,
house and entirely separated from ,
the other business houses of the
town. Their move to Main Street ,
will enhance the value of otbsr |
property in that part of tho town j
aud will result no doubt, in bringing
still other comoanies to Conway.
Tho friends of the Company |
for many years pa^t, have been
urging Mr. P. A, Burroughs to
move the business down town and |
these friends were working not only (
r ic the interest of Mr Burroughs,
but in behalf of the other business
j interests of Conwny. ,
Between the 0IV130 building and ,
thejstore of Mr W It Lewis an avenue
30 feet in width will be opened running
all the way from Main Street
to the lake wilh concrete pavements
and proper grading. The front of
the new buildings will consist of
plate glass and selected brick. The
cement side walK which has already
been laid down to the southern wall
of the Russ-Adams building will be

The appeal of W, J. Bruton from
the decision of the Mayor's Court,
finding him guilty of violation of
the town ordinance relating to con ?
traband liquor came up for hearing
in the higher Court on Wednesday
of last week. Ha had boon tried in (
the town Court on two counts, one
for selling liquor and one for trans- !
porting contraband liquor on the
streets in the night time. The :
writtou verdict of the Mayor failed
to state whether ho had been con- 1
victed upon both of these counts, or ;
only one of them The Court decided
that they would sustain the con- '<
viction upon thecourtfor transport- 1
but not upon the count for selling '
and the case was remanded to Mayor 1
Little for the purpose of re sentenc- j
ing Bruton. After this decision of
the Court Bruton remained about 1
town, but on the following morning
he had disappeared and could not '
be found. He is still absent. 1

Editor llerakl:?Soon after returning
home after adjournment of
General Assembly, on Eebruiry 10,
I was besieged on every ha'd, beside
-s haing II axled with letters from
all quarters of the county o incoming
a "Bill" which was presumably
made into law regarding the selling
of drugs. The rumor and certain
auonvmous writers who circulated
a part of the printed bill had it that
uo one could sell drugs of any kind
after 1st of July, If 10, except a p yMcian,

medicine; and said bill was introduced
by Mr Ridgell The rum o*

had passed or would piss and would

wore importuning their represonlat

was never acted upon by the

Now, whv tho bill was never reported
