The indications are that there
will be more commercial fertilizer
use! In this county than ever before.
More land is also being
brought under cultivation, and more
interest is being taken in agricultural
alTa'rs. One of the many
good signs which points to a better
system of agriculture is that our
farmers are subscribing for up-tod
?le agricultural pipers, periodicals,
bulletins and other literature bearing
on this subject, which they are
giving their undivided attention and
thought. Along this line we are

With the latest improved farming
implements and a better understanding
of the soils and their adaptability
together with a better and
more economical system of farm
work, Horry will soon rank as the
richest and most advanced agricultural
county in the State, as its

The annaul report of Comptroller
General Jones shows a deplorable
condition in the t.ix department of
the Stato. Co Treasurers and Auditors
are charged with malfeasance
in ofhee all the way from carelcsness
up to down right stealing pure and
simple. It is a gloomy picture, indeed,
tlat the Comptroller General
paints, and one, too, that brings the
blush of shame io the face of every
honest man, not for himself but for
his State, and almost makes him
deny that he is a South Carolinian.
If conditions are such as Mr Jones
says they are, and we have no reason
to question his statement., then
that department is greatly in need
of thorough investigation by a legislative
committee, for there must
be something radically wrong some
somewhere and the cause should be
discovertd ai d the remedy applieo
without any unnecessary delay. Buis

of his office force is supposed ti
visit each covinty once a year to
witness, with the forornan of the

between the County Auditor and
Treasurer. This settlement is usually
completed between trains, or in
a couple or so hours at the farthest I
when it should have taken as many I
davs to make a thorough and intelligent
investigation, and is oftentimes
conducted in such a crude and
unbusinesslike manner as to make
innumerable loopholes to perpetrate
and cover up defalcation and many
o those who have stolen public moneys
or arc who disposed to steal have

manner in which these annual set- j
tlements are made. To make this 1

when he attests to the accounts should
be made to make good the
shortage or to wear stripes behind
the prison bars. It will have this
effect at least of making him more
careful in his examination and those
who are guilty will be made to suf- |
fer.
