Magistrate's Court. ;
Magistrate N. Sweet held an investigation
last Thursday upon a '
warrant sworn out by John D
Smith against Geo. W. Watrs, Sr '
and his son M. W. Watts, charging
ooth of them with assault and bat- \
rery of a high and aggravated nature
This was only a preliminary investi- 1
gaiion and only the State's side was '
heard. From the testimony of the 1
State's witnesses which was taken
down by the Magistrate it appears '
that the difficulty tool; pi ice on Jan- 1
uary 12th in front of the barn door of
Mr. Smith lie was sitting in tfie 1
barn door when the defendants came :
along, one with a sack full of s*ee 1
traps and the other with a double \
parrel gun. There had been some *
irouble between the two men before f
and Smith decided togive the others !
notice not to trespass on his land.
Astheypisskd along the road by '
him and spoKe to him, he stated to
them that be would forbid them en- *
entering on his land and trapping 1
and from 'his one word brought on
another, and caused the trouble.
The elder Mr. Watts had drawn tingun
in Smith's face when Mrs.
Smith seized it and tried to take it
away from Mr. Watts. She testified
that he had the gun cocked and
..i i i? ... - -
^uiioucu uer several limes with ill
tinally throwing her loose and in-) i
jurinf her arm, In the mean linu y.
Smith managed to reace his pisu>?'
which was on the inside of the win- ,
low sill of the barn and when Watts i
got clear of the woman he found ,
that Smith had the drop on him
with the pistol. This wound up the
trouble for the time being, and no (
-me was shot. The Magistrate
;fter hearing this testimony put the
dcferidants under a $500.00 bond for
their appearance at Court in February,

.ve do not mean to say that these
misfortunes have crippled business
in Conway. Far from it. There is
as good chances here for success in
business as we will find any whore.
What we want to impress is the
fact that cond tions though already
good, can be vastly improved by
new concerns to furnish new
my rolls to the working people and
thus add to the volume of business
done in the town, and increasing
the possibilities for further growth
and pro.-gross here. Let all of our
people work togother to this end
and good along this lino will certainly
be accomplished. There is
a general growth in prosperity here
that is of course uuaiTected by the
lumber milis and that is the steady
growth of agriculture in Horry
County. The farmers are clearing
more land and using improves
machinery. They are now ditTerent
