estate dealer, was found dead near

Thursday night. Llddell had been
dead an hour or more when found hh
the body wan almost covered with
snow.

that his body was found within a
stone's throw of his home, a terrible
gash in the man's head told the story
of the tragedy, the wound evideutly

some sharp instrument. Scattered
all about the dead mun were toys
for hia little children and a number
of gifts for his wife.
Residents of the neighborhood,
where the two tragedies have occurred
one so quickly following the other
ore greatly wrought up over the
Crimea. Russell and Llddell were
both struck in much the same manner,
except Itussoll had four gashes
In his head, while Llddle had but
one. Russell died Christmas night

Joss Fuller and Joe Raker, two
white men, were arrested Sunday

away In a large automobile by C. M.
Wing and taken to Spartanburg.

committee," said Senator Christen

of the legislature and any newspaper

by sending a request to a member of
the committee. The most Important
matter to be considered at the coming
session of the legislature is the
report of their committee that has
Investigated the State hospital for
the insane. Cufortunately. the report
will not be ready for two or
three weokH. It will contain several
special reports by experts which are
not y? t prepared. These together j
with facts gathered by the committee
from personal examination of
physical condition and records here
and elsewhere are perhaps more important
than the testimony of witnesses
referred to. Hut It would be I
advisable for legislators and the peo- ;
pie generally to acquaint themselves
with their toatimouy which throws I

conditions that are general through- J
out our State hospital for the in- '
sane.
"It is going to take several hundred
thousand dollars to nut thia in

by certain news agencies and

full and accurate account of the

to allow such an Investigation

that the death rate at thin institution
is abnormally high and the re
covery rate abnormally low, owing
to shocking unsanitary conditions,
poor equipment, a lank of proper
treatment and lax methods throughout
all branches of the institution
that arc deplorable. It is painful
to make those general criticisms,
for there are ninny faithful workers
at this hospital struggling with conditions
that only their superiors can
remedy and they ere as anxious as
any to see them remedied. The report
will make these details clear.
"Meanwhile every family in this
State that Is peculiarly interested in
the hospital should demand that all
the fact* be known and proper moans
taken to remedy the evils. None of
ua can afford to ignore the needs of
these unfortunates, whoso condition
is now a disgrace to our State. We
have the opportunity to step into the
first rank in our care of the Insane,
and the people are sure to take it
If they are given the facts."
