A New Departure in Con- <
way's Finances.
FORWARD STEP IN PROGRESS
The Bunk of Conway Convcrlod into
The First [National Bank of
Conway.?$50,000 Involved In the
Deal-->lt Is I', oposcd 10 Issue Its
Own Currency In n Few iVIoiilfis
Announcement is made that the
Bank of Convnay has been commissioned
l?y the Comptroller of the
Currency to convert into a National
Banking Institution, with a capital
of $25,000 00 The necessary steps
are now being taken to complete the
conversion. This is only another
of the forward steps taken by this
progressive institution. With probably
one exception this is the first
bank in the Poe Deo country to
Nationalize?only one other being
in this district* It is a source of
pride that it enjoys distinction,
and the fact further demonstrates
the rapid progress being made in
Conway and Horry county. While
the Bank of Conway has done much
to bring about this progress, it is
now endeavoring to keep just a 1 itt'e
ahead of'the processiou. Within
a few months they propose to be issuing
their own currency, and be
prepared to meet all reasonable demands
made upon the institution.
Along with this announcement
come the equal good news that the
same management is organizing a
separate Saving- Bank to be known
as the Conway Savings Bank. Their
purpose is to found an institution
that will foster the principle of saving
and encouraging the practice of
economy among our citizens This
bank will do a strictly savings business,
and make loans upon real
estate. At the same time the "trust

charter, and it will accordingly
act as trustee, administrator, guarian,
bondsman, and other like capacities
common to a Trust Company.
J a connection with these, and by
practically the same parties, a new
Hotel Company is being organized
>vith a capital of $15,000.00. This
new company will take over the
present Kingston Hotel property,
real estate, building and equipment.
In the course of time the building
will be thoroughly renovated, new
furniture and fixtures installed, and
up-to-date management provided
* It is proposed to make the Hotel in
every respect equal to any in the
State and one that our people may
feel proud of.
As stated above, these three three
corporations are the outgrowth of
the present Bank of Conway, and
are owned and controled by its
stockholders. The history of the
Bank of Conway is too well known
that we need not rehearse hero. It
had an humble beginning in tho
ninotitu! with .1 mod est. oanit.il of
$20 000. It foil accumulated a
a surplus equal to its capital, and
was the first iu Eastern Carolina to
place itself on the "honor roll" of
well conducted Hanks of the State.
To-day it has a paid in Capital and
surplus of over $50,000 00, and has
total assets amounting to over a
quarter of a million do 1 irs. And
now comes the culminating period
in the history of its honorable career
that of entering the list of National
Banks. At the same time becoming
the mother of the twin corporations
above refered to
The present ofiicers are 15 G Collins,
President, D A Spivey, Vice
President and Cashier and VV P
Hard wick Assistant Cashier. Associated
with them are the following
members of the board of direc
tors. J A McDermott. D l1 McNeill
Hal Tj Buck C P Quattlebaum and J
C Spivey. All are men of experience
nnd judgement, and to their ability
is attributed much of the success of
the institution.

It is gratifying to both the teachi3i*
and pupils of the Eight Mile
school to have the privilege of re-,
porting the Schooi Improvement
Association entertainmeut which
tock place at that school on Friday
night, December 17th, was a
success beyond our most sanguine
expectations.
In the first place the teacher will
venture to say that the attendance
was one of the largest that ho has
ever witnessed during the past
oight years of his administration.
Second, wo bad excellent order
considering the occasion being at
night. Three hundred people is estimated
to have been present. This
school is one of the largest in our
rural districts. We had a program
consisting of about sixty five recitations
but on account of tho music
and addresses of visitors we had to
cut our program very short. The
program was as follows:

After the exercises attention was
called to those present to stay and
see the moving picture show, to
which cpiite a number stayed to wituess
this beautiful exposition.
We look forward to the future
and hopo to witness several more
occasions like this.

What wc Hope to See.
One of the things we hop3 to see
accomplished by the town during
the new year now approaching is
the laying of cement sidewalks on
all the principle streets of the resi
dence portion of the town. The
sidewalks that were put in along the
business street is an improvement
that every citizen is proud of, and
it was done at the private expense
of the ousiness men doing business
on these streets. The town cannot
claim credit for this. Out it is pos.

Leave Vour Hat at Home.
A good resolution for the ladies
to make, and to live up to it, during
the year 1910 at least, is that
when attending a public entertainment
of an} kind to leave their hat
at home. By doing so you will be
doing a favor to those behind you
and it is certain that you will look
prettier, and sweeter and more
charming than you would in a

Peach Basket," or any other covering
for the head calculated to obstruct
the view. Try it and sec il

This issue of the paper contains
notices of the formation of two new
business concerns, which, while they
will not add to the number of places
of business, yet will no douot be
able to do more business by reason
of bettor organization. We refer tithe
Con way Savings Bank and
Kingston llotol Company, notices
concerning each of which appear in
this issue.
The Bank of Conway, through its
stockholders decided to form this
institution into three corporations:
First, Tiic First National Bank of
Conway, a notice of which appeared
in this paper last week; Second, I
Con way Savings Hank, one of the
new concern above mentioned: and
third, The Kingston Hotel C .-nip my.
The Kingston Hotel is valuable real
estate, which has been owned by
the Bank of Conway for many years
past, and has proved a good investment.
By means of the new organization
this will constitute a new
corporation, and the stockholders
will take more interest in it as a
separate business coi c-irn.
All of these enterprises, are of
course, to remain under the same
general management, and they will
be in control of the sum* level headed
business men who have made a
success of the 13411k of Conway, the
IPst bank that ever made a iinaucial
success in Conway,
The officers of these new corporations
fo?* the ensuing year cannot be

that all of those now connected with
the Bank of Conway will hold positions
