Willi t ?ic Execution.
Melvin Watson was executed last
Friday at the county jail for the
killing of John Watson. The execution
took place in the middle ol
the day of execution. Watson was
asked if he desired to eat any dinner
and lie replied in the affirmative
and said that ho wanted pork and
riea. 1 ?o was fed at about the
regular hour for dinner and he. ale
heartily Two negro preachers called
on him and to them he said that
he had made his peace with God and
he expected to go straight to heaven
He sent for Kill Fowler who he tried
to kill a few days before and said
to him that he wanted his forgivness
for the act and that he had
nothing at all against him.
The negro was cheerful as he was
arranged for the execution and went
to the trap apparently very little
concerned. When everything was
ready the sheriff called to those
below who might bo under the trap
to look out. and Watson spoke to
the sheriff and asked if anybody
down there would hurt him. This
was about all he said at d when asked
by the sheriff if he wanted to
make a statement he said nothing.

The angel of death visited th(

daughter, Mrs W B Woodward.
Alcie, as she was commonly called,
married Mr W B Woodward on January
15'h last, and was only 19years

community where she had always
lived from her birth. Only one week

Alice Harrison, was buried at Union
church. Alice had been married a
little more than two years and was
only 10 years of age. The death of
Alcie and Alice has cast a gloom

deeply sympathize with Messrs
Woodward and Ga?que in the loss

Rev O Rour.tree, with a house

J, l. . Tompkins, a Local
Merchant Skips,
TOOK CHILD. LEFT WIFE
To All of Tlio?o lie t.oft lie Made

Wife Provided For. A Woman
Said Io l*e in tlic Case.
There was a sensation in the Howall
section last wcok when J. T,
Tompkins, a local merchant, disappeared.
Nothing has been hoard
from him for more than a week now.
Ho took his youngest child with
him and left his wife and several
children behind. To all of those
which ho left, however, he made
leeds for valuable real estate and
to his wife he loft, some valuable personal
estate and papers it is said.
It appears that he was consider- j
xoly indebted but he owned proper- I
ty wldch was amply sufficient to
pay all that he owed and perhaps a
arire lot besides.
ll is also stated.that he ran away
with a Mrs Duraut, another man's
wife. She has been missing since
the same time that Tompuins disappeared.
iiis wife is heartbroken
itver the alTair and came to Conway
last Monday to seek legal aid in her
diHicullies. Tompkins h;vs several
uroiuers who live mine same part
A the county. They a re doing what
Ih?\y can for Mrs Tompkins.
It is stated that Tompkins took
with him when he loft, his baby
child, slipping it away from its
mother not knowing of his intended
il ght. When the mother mentions
her baby child she tills with grief
and sutlers, perhaps, more from the
loss of her child tnan from the loss
of her husband.
lie left a statement to the erTect
that lie left on the account of his
debts and obligations which he could
not meet. On the other hand it is
said that lie left with plenty of money.
At last accounts no trace had
keen heard of him. On the day lie
left he took the morning train for
Chadbouru and was seen in Chadbourn
but no one remembers having
seen him board a train at thai
place. Mrs Tompkins has wired several
points in the hopes of hearing
something from him but so far she
lias not succeeded in this in any
particular.
Tompkins conducted a small mercantile
business at Howell Siding
but it is stated that his business
went down some time ago and that
he kept nothing in stock. IIe had
been involved in some litigation during
the past year. He was prosecuted
last April for selling whiskey
but as to this, there was nothing in
it and he was aquitted by the jury
I lis brothers, who live in the
Adrian .section are all known as

citizens.
