As stat d before the town was unincorporated,
Ai one time intoxicating
liquors were foM, not however,
uncUr a municipal license but
under the various systems governing
the sale of intoxicants which
obtivned previous to the enactment
of the law prohibiting its sale ex
cept in incorporated ci ies and
towns.
I do not believe that I miss it far
when I siy that the population did
not exceed '100 soils all told. The
dwellings were, like angers visits,
few and far between and for the
most part uncomfortable and inconvenient
in arrangement and unattractive
in appearance. Some were
pain ed end others were not* No
effort whatever was made bv either

man or woman to "follow the styles'5.
As a rule a sun bonnet and calico,
dress satis ird the simple wants of
the women while a wollen shirt and
jeans pants made a man feel as
dressed as ajim dandy.
The only brick buildings in Couwayboro
igh were the court house
and jail, and th se buildings even
at that date were in a state of decay
and later on both had to be
strengthened with iron rods and
heavy pUbs to hold their walls in
position and to prevent them from
falling in ruins to the ground helow

the closing day will be the visit of President

Pair O rounds to several thousand people and
afterward will be taken through the city aud
shown the principal points of Interest.
The premium list Issued some time ago
shows that a number of valuable prizes are
ottered for the best display of farm products.
This was one of the features last
year In which there was lively compel It ion,
and farmers throughout the state are writing
Secretary Love for Information as to
tlio conditions for entrance.
Another feature last year was the bench
show. There were so many entries In this
department that the society has decided
to Increase the prizes and classes to be ad-,
ml!ted and a special space has been sot
aside for the dogs.
The racing, of coarse, will be up to the
high standard. Since the society has Joined

tho racing is kept absolutely clean.
A special committee Is at work on tho
educational department. It Is planned to
have Tuesday set aside for the school* and
colleges, and with a view to encouraging
pride In school mid college work considerable
space will ho given for the exhibits.
Silver and bronze medals are awarded na
prizes. The students and pupils must get
their admission cards from tho officers of
the respective Institutions one week before
the fair.
Military day at the fair also promises to
ho largely attended. Prizes have been offered,
and thru President Mobley, after a
conference with a number of officers of the
South Carolina Guard association, active
work la being done among the various members
In order to Insu.e a large attendance.
Further announcement concerning the conditions
will he made later.
Aside from the fair proper there will ho
hundreds of attractions, including a large
| midway, and the main street of the city
?ui no nncu with shows under the control
of the officers of the Fair society. And
don't forget the C'nrollnn-Clemson football
t!?mo on Thursday. Of course all the railroads
will poll specially reduced tickets for !
nil visitors to the state fair. The attendance
promises to be the largest on record.
