is know probably by few of our
citizens that the United States Government
has a Department of Farm
Demonstration Work with a branch
at our State Capitol in Columbia.
Its purposei>to send out agents
into the different counties, or rather
to employ local men in each county
whoso duty il is to give instructions
and assistance to the farmers as to
improved methods of farming.
It is understood that this matter
has been taken up by Col D. A.
Spivey, Senator from this county,
with a view to'getting an agent located
in [Jorry. lie has had some
correspondence through Col E J.
Watson, tho Commissioner of Agrl- (
culture concerning the matter. In
a con verstaion with him a few days
ago, Mi' Spivey said he was hopeful
of gottiug tho department to loca'.o
an agent here, (
"1 feel that it would be a great
help to our farmers" said he, "could i
we get the Columbia branch of this
wot i< interested, as well as Commissioner
Watson's Bureau, in Horry

him from $50 to $75 per month. He
will establish his otliee at the oounty
seat, or some central point, and be
prepared to furnish all kinds of in- j

advise and instructions as he may

AN ACCIDENT AT MILL
A.M. Burroughs Has His Left Hand
And Part of Ills Arm Cut Off.
There was a very serious accident
to Mr A M Burroughs last Thursday
morninir whereby he sustained

the loss of his left hand and arm
He is the owner and manager of
the A M Burroughs Lumber Company,
and had just gone to tho plant
and was attempting to arrange
something that was wrong about
one of the saws, when some part of
the machinery caught his sleeve
and pulled tho limbagaiost the saw.
His hand was cut otT near the wrist
but the rest of his arm was so badly
mangled tjmt a surgical operation
was necessary, and it had to be
taken off near the elbow. He stood
the operation well and was doing
as well as might bo exp3cted at last
accounts.

Why yes, I know wo did not dUv 1

satisfied and the umpire declared
the game in favor of Tilly Swamp
We were playing to the umpire's
decision and not the players'.
The Salem boys most certainly
did meet us the 3rd of September,
but we did not have a game because
the umpire wanted to play according
to bis rulos and we (the Tilly
Swamp boys) were in a habit of
playing according to base ball rules.
Mr Hardee was the umpire and
when he began playing to his rules
we asked him to explain that part
of the game and he skid if wo questioned
him any more he would ex*
pell us from the grounds. Of course
natually, we could rot keep from
talking and I guess he decided ho
had rather quit and call the yamo
than try to ex pell us from
the game, or at least he did the
former any way. Of course we
started to plav a game on the 2nd
and 3rd and Mr Watts gave the
score wrong for we (the Tilly Swam])
boys) made two scores and I an;
certain Mr Watts cannot or will
not deny that and if ho doe? I prefer
no further argument.

The revival meeting at. Beulah,
which commenced on the third Sunday
night ult lasted for one week
and two days. We had a grand and
glorious meeting. The Ho v L\

Kev D. D. Cox, during this meeting
and they, together with other
visiting ministers preached the gospel
in a plaiu and simple form
Thero were four who claimed to he
converted and six woro added to the
church. We believe that there was
much and lasting good accomplished
during this meeting. Christians wore
made to rejoice and gave God the
praise. A large crowd attended
and they are commended highly fov
their good behavior.
There will be preaching at Beulah
on Friday night before the dth Sunday
and will continue on until Sunday
night. All are invited to attend.
We are having an overgrecn Sunday
school at Beulah under the skillful
management of H. W. Boyd as
su perintendent.

Monday before Magistrate Sweet in
a case brought against Dick Small a
negro charged witn assault and battery
with Intent to kill. The defendant
was represented by an attorney
but after hearing the evidence the
Magistrate bound the negro over to
court where he will hay? to answer
next February.
The oftlceof Prof Brown, Superintendent
of Education, last Saturday
was crowded with people who are
interested in the location of certain
school district linos near Adrian.
It uoems that there are two districts
iu that section, one of them boing
an old district known as Popular
school district, and two which were
attempted to be formed later known
as the Watts school district, and
Booth school distriot. It seems that
the new district cannot get the required
territory without cutting in
, the old district and this lias caused
the trouble.

Company plant has decided to move

The County chain-gang was somewhat
enlarged by the recent term
of the court, and it is now at work
on a section of road crossing Crab
Tree Swamp, just this side of the

Two negroes had a fight at Allen
the latter part of last week, and
one of them was so badly handled
