possibilities were as great as claimed,

pictured? Were the people so lazy,
indolent and thriftless that they failed
to develop the raw material that
was going to waste in nature's great
Store? None of these things was the

That there was scarcely a
/section in any community in the
up country but was within easy
reach of a good market and not far

on the IVilmingtor,, Columbia and

Unlike the people of almost every
other section of tho State they had
but little cultivated land to resume
tho interrupted struggle for a livelihood,
The excigies of the situation
called for the pursuit of a work
that would bring an immediate return
in clothes and fuod for their
thinly clad and half starved families.
The conditions were such that
would permit of no delay. The timber
interest of the county was vast,
its forests abounded in large tracts
of tiuiber; which yielded bo h lumber
and turpentine and as the peo
pie of the other counties turned
their attention to agriculture and
stock raising with cotton as a basis
of credit, so the people of I lorry
turned tho.r attention to ton timber
and tumuit no with the latter ns a

were neither pleasing nor satisfactory
in oontrast. Instead of the

the road of progress and wealth

of capital in factories, manufactories,
