jury is sworn to render a true
verdlot according to both the law
and the evidence, and not according
to the biased judgment of a newspaper
editor.
?
The right of trial by jury is the
essence of constitutional government
and to abridge or abolish that
right would endanger the life and
liberty of the citizen.
We would all he glad to have the
railroad track moved from Main
street, but the question is has the
town the finances to pay the railroad
people the cost of making the
change?
_______ ^ ?
The town authorities should make
a special effort to rigorously enforce
the ordinance prohibiting stock running
at large ami thus lay the foun
dation for the organization of a
Civic League.
?
Testimony given in a court of
justice may be distorted, added to
or taken from by a newspaper so as
bo warp, miimno ami prejudice puo
lie sentiment tor or against an accused,
but it can never \var)? the
calm judgment of the law,
Farnum may or many not have
been guilty of graft, but under tin
law us iuterpretted by Judge Meir.liiinger
the trial jury could have
found no other verdict but acquittal.
Had they convicted the probability
is that the verdict would have been*
set aside and anew trial ordered.
,y v .
In an appeal case to the Circuit
Court, J udgo Aldiich presiding,
from tlie sentence of the Mayor's
court in the case of a person charged
with the violation of the dispensary
law, the learned Judge held that
neither a Mayor nor a magistrate
has the authority under the law to
try persons charged with the violation
of the dispensary law. The
town authorities, the Judge says in
substance can make the arrest, but
they must turn the prisoner over to
a magistrate whoso only authority
iR to bind the prisoner over lor his
appearance at the court of Sessions
for trial. The city took an appeal
and the case goes to the Supreme
Court and the decision of this court
ib looked forward to with great interest.
CONWAY Aft A TOBACCO MART.
ine Horry Tobacco Warehouse
closed its doors for t he season last
Tuesday, it is a matter of congratulation
to all concerned that the season
has been-such a gratifying success.
We are reliably informed that
over a million pounds of tobacco
have been sold since the opening ol
the season. This means much for
the busiuess interest of Conway as
it put in circulation right here in
our midst thousands of dollars that
would have otherwise gone elsewhere
or remained idle in Iho banks. It
has also demonstrated the truth of
the claim that Conway is not surpassed
as a tobacco market by any
other town in the Slate, Besides*
this the successful season just closed
has gone a long way to ward restoring
confidence in the ability of Conway
to "deliver the goods," whenk
ever called upon to do so. A great
deal of credit for this success is due
Manager J U Bowles for his indomi
table energy, unceasing efforts and
untiring push as well as to his able
corp of assistants who labored so
earnestly, so faithfully and so persistently
in doing exact jostice to
all parlies at interest. Ti e policy
