In reference to the men who did
business in tin* county in the dark
days now passed, mention of whom
was made in my last, instalment,
should be added the names of Bur
roughs & Collins, at Cool Spri g?

home in all Horry but what there has

driven from it by their unpromising
environment to seek a name and a
place in the lanks of the world's
successful sous. There were but
few mothers whose hearts were not
lacerated a id bleeding over-tile absence
of a son who hud left the
light of home, dim as it was, to
seek a livelihood in strange lands
and among strange people. Horry
has contributed of ninscleand brains
the flower of her youth to build up
and develop the resources of other
counties in other States.
The political history of Ilorry is
unique in that it was the fir tcounty
in the Stiteto throw off the degrading
yoke of negro domination and
to her belongs the distinction of
driving the entering wedge into our
body politic which was destined to
split asunder the power of scallawag j
mU-governmeut and put an end
to radical stealing. There is a tradition
that says llorry won her nickname
"Indcpi ndent Republic" from
this fact 1 understand that the
voting strength of llorry far exceeded
that of the negroes and after
the first few yours of the radical
regime she was able to gain control
of the county government without
resorting to fraudulent election 1
methods to do so which nearly all,
if n.t (juite all, of her sister comities
were guilty of, but which under
the circumstances were excusable.
In this respect her escutcheon is untarnished.
But strange as it may
appear, yet nevertheless it is a fact,
tn?t notwithstanding her political
independence and her certain Democratic
majority, not a single son of
llorry was rewarded with a State,
Congressional or judicial office from
the Hampton revolution of 1876 to
that of Tillman in 1890. The claims
of Horry weiedi regarded-they were
not even considered. Marion lawyers
dictated the political policy of
Horry and controlled her vote. To
have even hinted at a llorry citizen
being elected to any of the State
offices or to that of a judge, or solicitor
or congressman would have
been nothing less than high treason
against the Marion politician who
pulled the strings. But once during
that time w is an effort made to
break the inllueuce of Marion and
that was in an independent move
ment led by (.'apt T W Daggett, A
11 Shipper, 1 T Lewis and several
others whose names 1 cannot just
at this time recall, but they will be
obtained and appear perhaps in a
revised addition in another form,
which is assuming shape. This
