l'ho surest way to repeal an obnoxious
law is to make it as drastic
as possible.
Say, friend! do you realize the j.
fact that it is up to you whether or i
not Conway is to have a cotton seed
oil mill? The opportunity never was 1
brighter and if we now allow it to c
pass by unimproved it may never c
return; or if does, Conway will have
lost ten years of prosperity and
thousands of dollars in money. Re- ,

affairs of men which, if taken at its '
Hood, leads on to fortune and to
fame." That tide is now here. Will ^
we take it?

It is claimed that Dr Cook, an intrepid
American explorer, has discovered
the North Polo. The Pole <
was reached on April 21, 11)08, sur- '
rounded by a dreary waste of ice,
but beyond the Pole is a considered
scope of land. No other particu- i

Cook, v lio is on is way home. If
it is really true that the Pole is real- 1
Iv discovered, what advantage is ,
that discovery to science or benclit <
to the human family except it be 1
to establish the fact that the world
is round and not Hat and that there's
land beyond the Pole,

It is contended that under the
existing law intoxicating liquors
shipped into dry counties are subject
to seizure as soon as they are
delivered to the consignee by a common
carrier, whether the liquors are
intended for personal use or illicit
sale. It is doubtful, however, if the
law will stand the test of the courts
and the State or a municipality will
probably he called upon to pay heavy
damages for exercising authority
not warranted by the Constitution
of this State nor of . the United
States, and entirely repugnant to
our Republican institutions. The

wisdom,
Appendicitis has given place to
Pellegra%s a fashionable, consequently
an. expensive, disease and
for the most part is confined to the
idle rich. Many of those who can
afford tho expense of a hospital
course or the surgeon's knife, in our
opinion,claim that they have Pellogra,
or its vulgar name, Hook
Worm, just for the sake of spending
money and being considered a member
of the Four Hundred clan. We
of the South in particular have been
eating corn in one way or another
since "tho memory of man runneth
not to the contrary," and until the
last year or so no one ever heard of
this new fanglcd disease invented in
the fertile imigination of some practical
joker presumably to frighten
the peoplc, play upon the self importance
of the would bos and reap a
harvest of fees. Mortality statistics
prove, if they prove anything,
that we of tho South are just as
long lived and just?us free from liability
to disease and death as the

green footstool, and strange to relate,
but it is none the less true, that
we consume as much corn as any
other people. True, we have aches
and pains, and sickness and death
stalks abroad iu the land like grim
monsters, but these things happen
in every community in this wide
world. ',They are the results of
Adam's disobedience and we may
expect to suiter these afflictions as
long as the world stands. If wo eat

untimely grave; if its cabbage the
cabbage snake makes ua shuffle of
this mortal coil; if its this, that or
the other article of food we are sure
to find a microbe or some other varmint
to shorten our days. Then
what shall we eat to prolong life?
Just what pleases our appetites, and
leave the results to nature and the
doctor, otherwise we would starve
