The County Board of Education
hold a mooting last Saturday for tbo
purpose of deciding an appual taken
by Caroline Roberts from a decision
of the trustees of School District No
7-1 near Conway expelliug her two
children from the school. All of
the members of the Board, to-wit.
Supt Brown, and Messrs E J Sherwood
and N J Builock were preseu t,
The trustees who expelled the
children arc Messrs j J j mes, j C
King and J S Lewis. After argument
by tho attorneys, the Board
decided to continue the hearing until
Thursday of this week at which
time many witnesses will boox irnined,
and the decision rendered,
about a year ago thoso children
were oxpe led on the ground that
they were nob white children. In
the light before the Board it was
not proved that the children had oneeighth
of negro blood, and hence they
could no, bo expelled, This time
they have been expelled on the
ground of their moral and physical
conditions, and surroundings, and a

At the opening of the present
term of the Four Mile School near
Conway, the trustees of the school
signed an order aud sent to their
mother vofusing to admit them.
These aro the same children who
wore excluded from this school
about a year ago on the ground that
they were not white, and on that
occasion the board decided that the
/ evidence did not warrant their
exclusion. The present controversy
was hoard last Thursday and they
were dismissed this last time upon
the ground that the moral and
physical condition of these children
and their surroundings at home were
such that the other patrons of the
school refused to send their children
to school with them. The hearing
was to have been had ou Saturday
of week before last, but the matter
was continued until last Thursday
to give time to some of the parties
to prepare for the hearing. The
matter was heard by the County

The hearing was attended by all
tho patrons of the school and they
all testified that they would not
send to school with these children
for the reason that their color
was questionable,, and then the
character of their mother and tho
home surroundings of tho children
were 'demoriliz'ng. I3y other witnesses
it was proved that the mother
of the children, Caroline Roberts, is
living on tho farm of F. W. Z:cUor
and that formerly she was living on
v the place of ono M. Wisby. Much of
the testimony was of a nature that
cannot bo printed, and there was
testimony as to a peculiar ailment
or sickness of one of the children a
few years ago. Tho trustees testified
that the patrons of this school
had refused to send their children to
school with the Roberts children,
and that they had to excluded them
or shut down the school, and seyenty-live
dollars of last years appropriation
was left unused.
The children were represented by
Messre 11. VV. Wait and Robt. B.
Smrhnrnmrh while fhn nih'.^na and
trustees of the school were represented
by EI, EI. Woodward. All of
the attorneys made arguments late
in the afternoon, the hearing consuming
iho greater part of the day.
F, W. Zecker was called as a witness
for the children as was also several
women who are related to Caroline
Roberts and who testified they had
been living at the home of Caroline
for at least a month during the last
strawberry season and that they
saw nothing improper there. The
4 decision of the Board is awaited
with interest not only by the trustees
and patrons of this school but by
many others who have taken aninterest
in the matter.

the hearing, it being understood
before hand that he would not be
called in the matter except in case
of disagreement of Messrs Brown
and Sberwocd.
The Hoard held with the trustees
so far as the present term is concerned
and the children excluded
but this does not concern the
mother as to their attendance at
some further date.

Land and Lumber Company.

000 bid of E. Li Freeman, of NorfolK
for the proportities of the Kanawha
Lumber Company, now in the hands
of receivers of the court and after
the proceedings were twice interrupted
by receiptof telegraphic bids
for a greater sum and the raising ol
his bid twice by Freeman, the oourl
made an order accepting Freeman's
last bid, $62,000, and directed thai
sale to his* assignee, the Elizibeth
Land and Lumber Company, bu con
firmed.

Mr N J Jacobs is recovering from
a severe caso of mumps and fever.
Mr John Clark has completed a
porch and has put on two coats of
paint on the new school building,
and will paint the roof when the
paint can be obtained, which does
aucl will add much to the appearance
of the school house. The name of
the school will be known as Oakland.
The trustees of the late Mt Nabc
church have bought a site on which
to build a church from Mr S M Anderson.
May God hasten the time
when a nice house of worship will
be built for we think it is needed.
The Suuday school is doing finely
under the superintondency of Mr.
G F Best.
Crops are doing fairly well except

Death of Mrs Addallnc Collins.

took away his loving wife, Addaline.
She was born May 7th, 1851
and died July 7th, 1009. She was
a victim of heart trouble and quiet
ly passed away while eating hoi
breakfast. She was a kind and lov
ing wife and mother and was lovet
by all who knew her. She was i
member of the Baptist church a
Pleasant View and lived a Chris
tain to the end.
She leaves a husband, seven sons
three daughters, one sister, twi
brothers and a host of friends t<
mourn their loss.
Her bright tmiles and kindl
greetings will be missed by he
many frieuds.
