MOB VIOLENCE.
Georgetown's sheriff, Mr Scurry,
is to be commended for his promptness
in rushing the negro liend, who
attempted to outrage the person of
a young lady school teacher, otT to
the penitentiary for safe keeping
and thereby saved the fair name ol
Georgetown from the stigma of the
supremacy of mob violence, is doserving
of commendation, not only
at the present time, but in the years
to come will he be given that praise
which his thougbtfulness,his prounpness
and his bravery in discharging
his sworn duty in taking such steps
as he deemed best to uphold the
majesty of thelawand vindicate jutice
entitles him to. There is no
question but had it become generally
known that the negro liend had
been captured and positively identilied
beyond all peradventure by the I
young lady as the one who made the
attempt before ho was taken to a
place of safe keeping, a "if^ck tie
party" would have inevitably been
the result. The people were ripe
to take the law into their own hands
and deal out summary punishment
to the despoiler of that which is sacred
and beautiful in glorious womanhood,
the public mind was inflamed
and judgment and reason dethroned
for the time being,an 1 it only
needed an incautious word or act to
fan the suppressed passions into a
Hame that could not be controlled

reigned supreme. ,
The nameless crime is the most |
atrocious crime known to the AngloSuxon.
For it there is no forgive-1
ness with him?nothing will satisfy \
him but the death of the perpetratrator.
In suuh cases the absorbing '
pri nciple is that mercy the brute to
the woman showed that mercy show
to the brute, and it mattered not to f
him as to the means used to show
that mercy. Such being the case it 1
is no wonder that the law's delay
and publicity given the victim be- L

some semblance of excuse to keep
the case out of court by hanging the
guilty to the nearest tree and the act
of the mob was general commended
by public opinion. But now condi- j
tions have undergone a change, j
While the crime is regarded with the j
same intense abhorrence, yet a re- jj
cent Act of the Legislature lias re- !
moved the causos for resorting to j
Lynch law to punish a great crime, j
It makes attempted rape a capital >
offense just as the actual crime, the
sentence, however, may be commut- j
ted to the penitentiary for a period j
more than 40 years nor less than 5 j
years. The act also provides f jr the v
taking of testimony in such eases in (
secret. This is further to protect
the identity of the female witnesses (
beyond the limits of the court room. \
There is also a law recently enacted 11
against the publi: Va;i c?f the names
of female victims or witi esses ex
cept in tlie court records. These
features, together with the speedy
working of lawfully constituted
courts leaves no excuse for resortinp
to Lynch law. We condemn the
crime as much as any one, we sympathize
v\ "'1 h the unfortunate victims
as deeply as anv one. but
wo stand for law and order first, last,
and all the time because they are tin
keystone of government and the
foundation of society.
The Horry Tobacco Warhouso will
run this year under the same management
as it did last. Manager

Sirah 1 Gore was born in North
Carolina. Robinson county, .ianuar\

Asa K Gore .January 27th, IKd-l, and
to this union eleven children were
born. She was a loving devoted
wife and an affectionate and kirn1
mother and a good neighbor. She
always seemed cheerful and was
ready to help the poor ami neod \ .
She joined the Methodist church at
tin? ujje ot twelve years and lived a
consistent member until her death,
June 15th, HKMh She leavos one sister,
ten children and a host ol
friends to mourn her loss, but wedo
not mourn as those having no hope.
While we feel that it is our loss we
hope it is her eternal ^ain. Her remains
were taken to Mount Ziou
church and fuoeralized by the Key

away toawait the resurrection morn.
