Tlic l>ctalls of ttlu first Crime of this Kind to Occur In this Section of the State Appeared In the Papers a Few Weeks Ago. ? The Majesty of the I.aw "Will bo Upheld in this Case. KW sonic time petitions bavo boon pending in the Governor's ollice from Georgetown county asking for a special term of the court for that county for the purpose of trying John Jenkins, the negro, who attempted a criminal assault a short time ago upon a young white lady in Waccamaw Neck. That the request lias been granted and the negro will be speedily tried appears by tlie following item in the Columbia Slate of last Tuesday: J,(!ov. Ausol has ordered a special term of court for July 27 to try John Jenkins, the negro accused of attempted criminal assault in Georgetown county and now in the penitentiary for safe keeping. Tt will probably be necessary to appoint a special judge and the governor has written the chief justice asking for a recommendation for appointment. This will be announced later. The present law means that conviction of attempted assault carries with it the death penalty unless there is a recommendation to mercy." The shcritT of Georgetown county has received praise far and wide for his prompt action in this matter, una me way 111 winch he managed to see that the law should not be cheated. The Herald deplores an atrocious crime like that, and as the young lady was an Horry g'rl, every man in Horry county would be glad to see the perpetrator receive his just deserts. Hut the law is the law, and it is to the lasting credit of this section of the State that the negro will bo tried in the regular way and get the punishment provided by law. Neither Horry or Georgetown will have to answer for a lynching. -loy. Editor Herald:?1 have been pat-! Jcntly waiting on our correspondent at Joy forsomotime, but as all things will come to an end I fear this is the?1 case with our correspondent from this section. C. L. Huggins passed through our section sometime back. While! in our neighborhood he erected some ! iron fencing around the grave of] Mrs Prudence linker which adds much to the looks of the Baker cemetery. The farmers are all busy laying by their crops and getting ready for picnics. E. S. C. Baker, H. B. and J. H. Baker all went to Conway last Tuesday and returned Wednesday. They report a good time with their town cousins. E. S. Baker, Jr., has been sick with jaundice but to the delight of his many friends is improving. JC. 8. Baker, Sr., has improved in health since the first of June and we hope he may continue to improve. Best wishes to the Herald and its readers. B. J. E. A Correction. In Mr J C Bryant's answer last week to an article sitmed "Junius". a mistake of the printer caused it to read as follows: "1 am fullv persuaded to go to divorce courts &c" where as Mr m'yant's copy as written by Mr iiryant was ''I am fully persuaded that he (meaning Junius) will have to go to divorce courts A3." Owing to the mistake of the printer it would appear that Mr Bryant was persuaded to go to the courts whereas he means to say that Junius would haveto 00 to the courts to find a feminine of his persuasion and the Herald is sure that everyone who is acquainted with the high character and standing of Mr Bryant would not think for a moment that he had any occasion to go to a ny such courts "Junius" a friend of the paper, wrote his article for purposes known to himself and seems inclined to have a controversy, but we think Mr nryant has the best of it, and that the matter will end here. ? ? ? ? ? Farmers are busy now laying bv their crops. Corn is fairly s^ood. Cotton is small and tobacco is spotted. We have bjen having some line rains on the crop*. Mr Editor, you told us through tin I columns of your paper that several leases were sent up to the United States Court recently charged with violating the law in regard to selling whiskey, We want to know what the result was. Mrs Ed Marsh is visiting her patents and friends in Flo.yds. Wha . would be the answer? I can't, i haven't any. But thoy can pay onu dollar to ride to Myrtle Beach that day and when they get there they can pay lilty cents lor dinner and lifty cents for a bathing suit. What is that if it is not a sin? They had rather give those rich men two dollars than to give that poor orphan child a nickle to holp to buy it clothes so it can go to church. 1 am sorry for the people that will go on in this way." Some may say that it is not any harm to ride down to to the beach on Sunday. 1 say it is wrong, I have heard that it has broken up sotne Sunday schools already. The Sunday excursion comes along and gets some of the crowd, but still we are having Sunday school just the same. Rev /Y. S. Doak tilled his regular appointment at this place last Sunday. We arc always glad to see him como. Mr John W. Prince lias resigned his position with The Stone Co , of Wilmington, N. White Man Arrested for Stealing. Chief Marshal Kortescue last week arrested a white man who jptve his name as N n Westbrook, who was charged with stealing some clothing from the lumber camp at ounters Islands. Mr Cortescuo went to the store of joe liabil hunting for this man and Joe informed him that the man was not in the store. The Marshal had been informed that the white man was seen tfoin^ in there just a few minutes before, and he remained on the street and watched the place until lie saw Westbrook stick his bead out at the door.
