Sunday was a fateful day, there t
being two drownings reported here h
on Monday. s,
Sam Hughes, a son of Mr and
Mrs L. F. Hughes was drowned near a
Eddy Lake and the remains were tl
interred on Monday at the burying ti
ground of the family on Pee Dee. [\
He was on a boat used by John H. vv
McCaskill in taking up logs for the o
Eddy Lake Cypress Co. In walking h
across a lloat attached to the boat y
he stepped over the edge and called tl
for help. Mr McCaskill told him to
swim to some bushes and hold on ^
until he could come around on the j*
bank and help him. When he reach- n
ed the place Sam had disappeared ?
and was nut seen again until his ^
dead body was taken from the water.

logs, was chasing a negro around
the cabin with an axe. Both of t
them fell in. The negro was saved t
while the white man was drowned. G

corous both on the train and at the ^
beach as any one could desire. On (
both occassions there was very little r
drinking and they were conspicious *
for the absence of fussing and a
fighting Those occasions seem to be a
more like a love feast than anything c

The negro, Melvin Watson, who *
shot and killed Mr John Watson at s
Green Sea on June 2nd, was safely u
lodged in jail last Sunday morning 0
about 8 o'clock. Searching parties ^
had been scouring the country ever c
since the (lav of the killing, making y
every elTort to capture the negro, fWord
reached the neighborhood that v
he had been seen near Whiteville, N. v
C., and other points, and the tele - c
phone and telegraph lines were kept r
bus}' trying to locato him. The
process of catching him was slow,
but hope was by no means abandoned
.
Last Saturday night about dusk *
a tenant living on the farm of C. *
M. Reaves, near Green Sea, called
on Mr Reaves at his home and told
him that the negro, Melvin Watson
was then at his (tho tenants) houso.
Mr Reaves took a shot gun and went ^
to the tenant's house and covered
the negro with his gun before he
discovered that Mr Reaves was \
about the place. When Melvin Wat- ^
j son found himself looking down the
j barrel of a gun he was frightened
almost to death, and begged pitifully
for his life, making no resistance
whatever. Mr Reaves tied
him, took him in his buggy and
j brought him to jail at the hour slat- ^
j ed. The negro who gave him up to Mr
| Heaves is a relative of Melvin Watson
and whether his action was
prompted by his sense of justice or
a feeling of fear yet it deserved
credit.
Mr Reaves will got the sum of
$150.00 for the capture of the mur- 0
eierer, $100 of which will be paid by
the Governor of the State upon the
negro's conviction, and $50 which
will be paid by the family of the
murdered man. It is said that if the
negro had been caught by the crowd
who was hunting him, he would
have been lynched. As ho is now
in jail the law will be allowed to take
its course. The negro has a very
sullen demeanor, and by his appear- s
ance shows that he is a brute of the |
lowest and meanest kind, fie talks
very little about the affair, except e
to say that he did not mean to kill
Mr Watson, and that the gun went e
oil before he aimed it. lie claims
that he was near Green Sea all of r
the time except one day when he t
went to a lumber mill near White- t
