Hacker .Ylaiiuf a. turlnjr Co.
The door, sash and blind business 1
of Messrs Ceo. S, 11 acker & Son, at
Charleston, S. C., which was established
by Mr Geo S. llaeker in the
year 1842, has been bought by the
llaeker Manufacturing Co. The
new company is composed of some
of Charleston's bestknownand most
progressive business men, and we
have no doubt but that, the record
established by the former firm for
fair dealing and the manufacture of
honest goods will bo maintained by
the new concern. Tho name of Geo
S. Hacker & Son has for almost
three-quarters of a century been a
synonym for tho best in door, sash
and blind manufacture, and we bespeak
for the Hacker Manufacturing
Co , the good will and confidence of
the people of this community.
Mr G. B. Buell, of the firm of
Buell & Roberts, is president of the
new company, and Mr J. B.Davis,
constructing engineer of the Virginia-Carolinia
Chemical Co., is vicepresident,
Mr John B. White, late
of Cameron, S. C,, is secretary and
treasurer, and Mr P. J. Prendcrgast,
who has been superintendent with
Messrs Geo S. Hacker & Son for
fifteen years is general manager.
We call attention to the advertisement
of the new company in
this hsue.

If it is true, it is sud to relate,
but it appears to be a lamentable fact
that we have some drones in the
bee hive of iudustry. This indif.
fere nee in carrying out the will oJ
the people expressed through th
ballot box in reference to public
utilities was never more apparenL
than in the case of the internal
improvement committee of Con way 1
There may be a sufficient explanation
for this long delay in floating
the water work bonds of Conway l!
there is the peoplo should know the
reason why it has not been done.
Years ago the progressive citizens
of Conway voted upon themselves a
tax something like $110,000 for internal
improvements?that is for water
works and sewerage systems
The placing of these bonds were en
trusted to an internal improvemeni
committee, and from that day til)
this nothing more has boen hearo
from that committee except that a
survey had been made and a map
drawn, both ot which were paid for
by the taxpayers of Conway under
the Smith administration years afterward.
Why is that these bonds
have not been placed and the water
works and sewerage systems not
installed? Why this rellection upon
the fair name of Conway? Is it
possible that Conway, with her

sources, her process and her enterprise
cannot place $110,000? Perisl
the thought! for there are men in
Conway today who would jump at th(
chance to take up those bonds be
cause they are gilt edge security.
