Too much attention cannot bo ^ivon
to a strict observance of the sanitary
laws, for in the enforcement of

Board of Health will well and truly

The 1a.il end of the equinox struck
Conway early last Thursday morning,
and all that da> the wind blew
"great guns," but no damage was
done, however. The storm was severe
in the central section of the
State, where houses wore demolished,
trees uprooted and great damage
done to railroad, telegraph and telephone
companies. Fortunately no
loss of life is reported, although
stock suffered severely.
The conviction of the Coopers,
father and son, at Nashville, Teun.,
the other day, of the murder of for
mer United States Senator Carmack,
was a triumph of law and order.
These men, priding themselves upon
their high social standing, upon
their chivalry and upon their brave

evidence reads, while he was peaceably
walking along a prominent
thoroughfare of that city and while
in the act of raising his hat to a
lady friend whom he chanced to
meet; and, what makes the crime
more revolting and cowardly is,
that they did not face hi;n as
brave men would naturally have
done, but they shot from behind his
baek and not until he was falling
dead at their feet did they face him
The chief reliance for a verdict of
acquittal was the plea of the "unwritten
law." In this case there
was no justification for taking human
life, nomitigating circumstance
connected with the tragedy, it was
nothing less than premeditated cold
blooded murder with malice afore
thought. And yet., these men demanded
an acquittal solejy on the
ground that they wero "aristocrats'
and that blue blood flowed througl
their veins. The civilized world waf
appalled at the alTronteryof the met
whose hands were stained with the
blood of their fellow man and wh(
had wilfully and maliciously violates
the law of their country, in golnj
before a court of justice with sucl
an outrageous plea.
