The General Assembly lias ro
pealed the lien law and it now only
needs the signature of the Governor
to boeome a law. It will not, however,
take affect until next January.
All liens now given and to bo hereafter
given up to January 1, 11110,
are valid.
Nothing further has been heard of
the petition asking for an improvement
in the passenger servico to
and from Conway by the addition of
another train in and out of Conway.
We presume the railroad people are
giving this matter their careful consideration,
or else the petition has
been pigeon holed to sleep the sleep
that knows no waking.

he would be successful, but his perseverance
won for him the support
of his colleagues, who lent a helping
hand, and their friends, the enemy,
were routed horse, foot and
dragoons. .
THE WHISKEY QUESTION.
The fight between the Prohibibitionists
and the Dispeusaryites
iu the State Legislature waxed hot
and hotter and the end thereof is
not yet. At one time it seemed as
if this question would block all legislation,
prevent the passage of the
supply bill and necessitate the calling
of an extra session to complete the
unfinished work of the regular session,
but this sore affliction was
happily averted by the Dispensaryites
openiug the way for the trans-!
action ol regular business by yielding
to the demand of the majority and
allowing the bill providing for State
wide prohibition to pass its third
reading in the House. So far as
that body is concerned it goes on
record as favoring the prohibition
of thesaleof intoxicating liquors as
a beverage in the State. The bill,
' as it passed tho House, does not
provide for absolute prohibition but
legalizes its sale for certain purposes,
such as scientific, mechanical
and medicinal. These exceptions
makes tho bill fatally defective as
under its provisions it makes it
possible for the establishment of a
drug store at every x road or in every
man's fence corner where liquor
can be lawfully purchased for modi

lowly and obscure paths of life to indulge
in that which takes away from
them their manhood and mars the
linage of their Creator, wo insist
that it is a greater crime for those
who occuoy a more oxhuultod plane in
lifo's field of usefluesstodo so,because
their itifluenco for good or evil upon
society, upon morality and upon their
fellow men is greater and their penalty
for the violation of the code of
morality should bo far moro severe,
hence we argue that absolute prohibition
of the sale of whiskey is the
only logical way of dealing with the

Christian Temperance Union of Conway
and Waccamaw church are due
friends in the various communities
that have sofeordially responded to
their requests for appointments for
meetings for Mrs Emma G Deiti ioh
who will begin her tour in the State
with the meeting at Home wood February
18.
After week full of work, in some
cases two meetings a day, Mrs Dietrich
will go to Georgetown county,
ihenco to the interior of South Carolina
and on until a six weeks tour
has been finished. The reading public
will do well to noto tho appointments
and attend which ever meetings
that aro within reasonable distance.
Mrs Deitrich is one of the prominent
workersof thoNew York Union.
She is the President of the Niagara
county W C T U., and State Evangelist.
She is an interesting, forceful
talker and gives full emphasis to
the "thus saith the Lord" of the
Scriptures regarding strong drink.
She was recommended to the South
Carolina Union by Mrs Helen L
Bullock when the latter was unable
to answer a call for her services in
IdOS, and by her charm of manner
and faithful work in the forty-six
places she lect ured won tho favor of
State and local workers. It is something
of a coincidence that sho
should begin her work this year at
the last place she held a meeting
last year. It is greatly regretted
that Mrs Deitrick cannot lill tho expected
appointment at Seven Mile
church, arrangements having boon
definitely settled for places too far
in the opposite direction to make it
convenient for her to return with
her limited time before it was known
that the above church could be obtained
for her.

Mr Gaston Allen is reported very
ill at this writing.
Several of the boys went to court
last, week but were disappointed.
There was a box supper at the
school house here on Friday night,
February 5th, the proceeds of which
will be used to paint the school
house We are glad to see the
young people taking an interest in
school improvement work.
Miss Fannie Belle Littles, the assistant
teacher in tho public school
here, has returned home, and Miss
Lillie Wright will teach the remain
, ing part of the term.
The kitchen of the Rev Tl B Roberts
was entirely destroyed by lire
on Saturday night, February 13th.
No one knows for certain how the
(ire started, but Mr Roberts says he
? left the kitchen at half past nine
o'clock and went into the other
1 house, which was thirty feet or
" more from the kitchen, and after a
- few minutes retired to rest, and by
^ the time he was asleep he was alarm
ed by Mr Manassa Cannon, whc
lives near by, and was told of his
B trouble. Further alarms wert
s made and a large crowd gathered t(
. the scene and saved all except the
( kitchen and what was in it. Then
was near twenty bushels of peas
