Com mlttcd in Gcorjro Adams, Barber Sliop on Tlic Hill Without Any Apparent Justification. Some excitement was caused last Saturday by the killing of Willie Purmley, a negro, by jjo oaddy, another uegro, The aT'air took place between sun down and midnight on Saturday at the negro barber shop of ueo Adams, "on the Hill." It seems that thoy were under the inM"ence of whiskey, and while there t & t not much said at the timo to J 6.^ii^one to think that there was very rich bad blood between the parties, yet it was done under circumstances soino of which are very much against .joc oaddy. He had a hu ge pocket knife with a long keen blade and had it in his hand, fie remarked to Willie Parmley that when he told a man he would cut him he would do so, Willio said something back at him, and oaddy motioned the knife at his heart, and whether intentionally or not, the knife penetrated his heart aud lie was dead within a few minutes As soon as oaddy saw that he had killed the other negro he fled. The SherifT caught him Sunday night asleep in his house. There was considerable loud talk and disorderly conduct on the part of the friends and relatives of the deceased negro, and the authorities wore kept busy for some time on Sunday preventing further trouble, Coroner II II Burroughs held an ! inquest over the negro at 12 o'clock on Sunday. The following gentlemen composed the jury: OEGrillin, S A Smith. II N Sessions. A Id rich presiding. , There are the usual number of cases on the contingent docket of \ In; General Sessions and a few eases on the regular docket that were continued from the last term. Clerk \V. L, Bryan last Saturday sent to the solicitor the following list of cases tiled with him" by the .lia^is-1 tratcs in the various townships in the county: State vs Pearl ilocks, riot. State vs Percy Stroud, assault. State vs P. H\ Ployd, J. Fioyd and Laura Graham, riot. State vs ClilV Ivy and Clyde Ivy, assault and battery. State vs Uohbie MeCray, hotniside. State vs J. M. The circumstances at I tending this homicide all came out at the coroner's inquest, which was I held at the time and the facts were ' published in the papers. finite a I lar^e number of witnesses have been summoned and it is expected that mis case win occupy two or Lbrce days of the court. A Man Ctiasc Willi llloodliounds Too chase of .1 P Walker, the Brunswick county murdererand jail .breaker, has be on practically abandoned utter possibly the most arduous and at times sensational man hunts in the annuls of criminal history in this section of the S'ate Last night word came from Shorill Litiox and t) >SM3 that after another day ai d night's seirch to ell'ect the capture of the pr isoner, he had been entirely lost s'ght of and tlx1 pursuit was reluctantly abandoned to the local authorities. The chase finally na rowed itself down to a contest of physical en durance and Walker with his long experience as a fugitive.and an inti mate acquaintance with the swamps travelsed, had the pursuers handicapped. Since ho skirted th 1 beach of Lake Waccamaw, passing on I through the village Priday afternoon, his whcieabounts have been unknown and with the use of kerosene and turpentine on his feet, he seems to have effectively thrown the dogs oil' h s trail. In making his escape from the jail at South port. Wa k r secured the ! piece of steel hoop which he used in filing his shackles from the cot pro vided in his cell 'lh;s filed the chain readily, as was afterwards tested, and from another pie o of the hooo brone from the cot,he made two keys placing thi in side by side, as to alt >rd thickness sulTiciont and opening the cell door with those. That he has been resourceful no one can doubt and after his long and trying chase b fore man and bloodhounds through the severest weather, that feeling in humankind which is always with the under dog in a light, inspries tomo admiration for the desperate young fellow that he is and whose capture is vet so important to the ends of justice. According to previous announcement the Burroughs Literary Society tuet the Toddviho Literary, Society in joint debate, at. Toddville school house, Friday night, i February 5th, and debated the: I <i lierv: 44R<v<nlvn<l t.hnt. lr?vr> tint irmfn I I ' J * ?WW . V"*" V " " UIV" I influence over man than money." It was understood between the societies that each one would have a representative and the two would select a third man to act as judrcs. The Burroughs Society sc-'j lected Mr I'aid Quattlcbaum, and the Toddvillo Society Mr A. M. I)u-enburv. Mr tjuattlebaum named l as a third man our Superintendent of Education, Mr S. 11. IJrown and this was most cheerfully agreed to; but Mr lirowu not being present Mr Dusenbury then gave the names of Miss Keller, teacher of the Hucksville school, and Mr \V, 1). Moore, a trustee t?f Port ITarrelsou school. Mr f^uattlebaum did not know Miss Keller and objected to Mr Moore and in turn suggested Mr I) ok Thompson, of Uucksville which choice was readily accepted by the ToddviHe Society. M*? , I.1 r i ?-?i o r. uarpor, president 01 j Twddvillc Society, alter making a few fitting remarks and welcoming the Hurroughs Society ami all visitors to our little town, opened Hie debate. Mr llenry Langston, Miss Klla Sessions and Mr Francis llollidav represented the I lurroughs Society while Donnio Dusonbury, Frank orecn and Harry llhcuark took special care of the Toddville Society. The speakers on both sides of \he query did exceedingly well The speech of Harry Lhcuark of the Toddvi.le Society deserves special mention. At the conclusion of the speakers the president directed the judges to rotire to toe ante room and carefully consider the points brought out by the two socities and render a verdict nccordinglyi Alter carefully consideiiig the matter, the judges decided in favor of the Toddville Society. This decision, however, seemed to bo very much disappointing, as some of the fair ladies of Conway were hoard to rem irk, "I have my opinion of the judges." "I wonder if there arc any honest people here?" '"Oh! 1 want to get away from Toddville." "Leave me anywhere else but at Toddville" etc. So sure weie they of success that it :? ?i it uiiwurniiiHJU Ul" U SOIIIG OI lilt? frieuds of Miss Sessions had u crown w th which to crown her when the judges rendered their decision and the Todd v-illp Society his still wondering what became cf that crown. The Todd vilie Soci ty has roceiv< d and accepted a challenge from Mr lion Sessions, of theOuliioun Society which society we understand, is much stronger than the burroughs Society. In order to satisfy the ladies of Conway we have decided to suggest us judges three of Conway's best men, who should be acceptable to the Calhoun, viz. Dr E. Norton, Dr If. EI. liur.v-.l V 1-.
