M. 11. WOODWARD, Editor
THURSDAY. FEB 4, 1009.
Our Columbia Letter.
Mr Editor: Having boon away
from home a week today, I was reminded
of my home and my constituents
back in Horry?a verv, very
dear place. 1 was struck with the
thought that possibly if not all, that
a t least some of the people, would
like to hear from the Horry boys in
the Legislature.
Very few of our people can realize
what a gigantic arrangement
this is?a body of men consisting of
124 members in the lower house and
42 in the upper house constituting
the General Assembly of South
Carolina. And, besides, there are at
lest, I suppose, a hundred olliciaL
besides who are attendants thereto,
consisting of chaplains, sergeants
at arms, mail carriers, pages and
waiters, Then comes all who have
interests in general laws to be made
in the State can be seen around in
committee rooms and lobby, every
one seeming to have a special object
in view or an axe to grind.
Apart from the capitol, at the
hotels cau be seen a lobby almost
the entire time. Not that I know
but it appears that here measures
are being considered and come direct
to the House for action as cut
and dried, and are rushed through
the House like a clyclone through
a country.
I have been, however, very favorably
impressed with members 1 have
V. ^4 1 1 _ T _ . it . t
met, aim sureiy 1 can say noian tlie
talent of the State is here, but, that
there is some of the best here that
the State can produce
The ratio proportionally consists
of about 40 odd farmers, with 25 or
more doctors and farmers, merchants
and farmers, lawyers and
farmers, doctors, ministers, architects
and teachers, the rest are simou
pure lawyers. With the dominance
of talented lawyers here it
gives the less prominent part of
members a very little showing to
figure in law making except to vote
aye and nay.
Wo, the farmers, however, counseled
together and had a concurrent
resolution passed through the House
inviting all farmers and those interested
in farming to mect.in the agricultural
committee room Wednesday
night, the 20th, to consider ways
and means of best laws; and, also,
to make an united elTort in behalf of
an economical government. This,
of course, means a condemnation
and vote, as we see it, against extravagant
legislation.',
Look out for me next wedk. 1
1 wish to remain true to my constituency,
my country and my Creator.
Respectfully, M M Stanley,

Tlic "Report" Denied.
Dear Editor: For the information
of the reading public, I will stati
that the report on Superintendent
W A Prince stating that he purchased
votes, or paid for same, on
Monday before the primary is false,
I was with Mr Prince all of Monday
afternoon at my house and do know
of my own personal knowledge that
he did not give to any person money
or anything else for votes. We
called at the home of Mr Henry
Fowler, near my place, who stated
that he was almost unablo to walk
to the polls at Green Sea, Mr
Prince and 1 asked him to go to
Loris to vote and his railroad fare
was handed him. Nothing was said
as to whom he must vote for.
Jj D Graham.
Howard, Horry co., S. C
I desire to state that the report,
which is being circulated, that exSuperintendent
W A Prince naid
4 - ?
me fifty cents to vote for him in the
primary last summer is utterly
false and untrue. Mr Prince came
on Monday befora the primary and
asked was I going to the primary
the next day. I stated that I had
no conveyance and was unable to
walk to Green Sea. Ho said my
name was on the club roll at Loris
and urged that me and my son go
down cn the train to vote there.
After telling him of my financial
condition he gave me fifty cents to
pay our railroad faro. On starting
we got in company with others and
walked to Loris, voted as we pleased
and returned. Mr Prince never once
asked me to vote for him. I have
8 nee handed the fifty cents back to
him.
Respectfully,
Henry Fowler.
