Pica for Better Teachers.
Mr Editor: While 1 am in my
room today unable to be out and
about my business, my mind is musing
over somothiny 1 mi#ht do to (
elevate the human family to a higher
and a more noble life. And one of
the first things to do is to constitute
in our homes with our family the
spirit of our Saviour, and the spirit
of our Saviour was to go about doin^
good. Now, how far olT we
have strayed from doing this way,
and in the meantime remember that
if any one hath not the spirit of
Christ he is none of his and if we
are not his what shall be our eternal
destiny?
The lirst thing to do is to seek
Christ and his ri?rhtoousness and
then we have the promise of all other
things we needed given unto us and
his promise is sure. Now we are on
a great platform, wo say, for better
things, and how is this to come? It
is to do all our work in the spirit of
Christ. Now we have many young
men and young women entering out
upon the field of service to bring
about these things, and what shall
their labatory bo? Shall their aims
be to cultivate tho mind of every
child in their schoolroom that he or
she is a creation of God and has
been brought into this world to
bless and t,o do good things or simply
to tack them down on their seats
to while away precious time and get
tho money for their term and leavo
the child not even knowing what he
or she was brought into existence
for. This should no longer be allowed.
Now with the elTort being made
by the lady educators of the State
and counties forming county and
local improvement associations for
the schools to assist teachers in doing
more etlieicnt work, there shall
ppmn nn ntnvn ov/mon fn%? o*

ers and no more precious time idled
away with the children, and thon
ignorance which has caused ?sueh a
cloud of darkness to hang over our
beloved State shall begin to pass olT
and we can behold the beauties of
the morning of a brighter day dawn
on our State. Now let ovorv teacher
begin to consider his or her groat
obligation they are under, for these
things cannot be brought about in
no other way than by such training
as wo shall be able to obtain in our
school rooms, and I would say further
to every parent and patron of
our respective schools, and also to
every trustee that the great work
we so much need done in our schools
for better education falls heavily
upon them, for wo cannot look for
nor expect, for these thing to
comefcwithout an united elTort, for
divived wo fall and united we stand.
Now 1 pray that every teacher and
every father and every mother and
every trustee, and 1 will also say
that every preacher and every doctor,
and every lawyer and inatris
irate and everyl merchant may
stand out on 1 ho groat platform of
time as it move along so fast and
look at the groat possibilities for us
in the near future with the black
cloud of ignorance moved away from
among us, and consider that all
must unite together so as to execute
our high aims: and I will also ask
you if we shall fail to bring these
things to pass, to just stop and
look at the opposite a moment and
see what a picture shall surelv come
upon us and our children. Yes, a
condition that will bring deep sorrow
and sadness to your heart and !
life. Well, then, let us all, while
while we now havo the timo and
chance to seize hold and work together
and have every school taught
by Christian educators, because 1
don't think that any teacher who is
not led by the spirit of Christ is lit
to go into our school houses and
take charge of our children.
Now, Mr Editor I hope and bolieve
you are interested along this
line of thought and will not let this
go into the waste basket. Yours,
J. H. STANLEY.

the church? I, as a young lady,
honor my God more than to partake
of any of thedevil worshippers. You
are leading your children down to
perdition. Mr Hardee wants to have
a box party at the church, and, oh!
he is in the wrong. Young people,
listen! If the old people will have a
box party don't partake with them
and God will reward you at the end.
Young people who go balls and playseal
their own doom, for come out
from among them, sayeth the Scriptures,
and be ye separate. Again,
the Scriptures say, train up a child
in the way it should go and when he
is old be will not depart from it and
Mr Hardee, do you think its the way
to train them at frolics, box parties
balls and plays in which way you
are trying to get the money of the
world to paint your church. To
have a box supper at a church to
raise money to finish a church is a
n in the sight. of high heaven and
disgrace to your young men and
oys. Young ladies, did you ever 1
now a young man to marry a young
irl who goes to frolics? Young la
ios df) you go there to get married,
r receive the attention of young
aen? If so, that kind of company
3 not worth having, and the voung
.iris who attends frolics will not
nake a man happy and loving help
ncet. 1 hope all will seriously oonemplate
these thoughts, imperfect
.hough they may be, especially Mr
lardee, and may the Lord have
)ii them and save them in glory.

She was a member of the Clarendon

the Sunday school in the exercises
of which she took a great interest.
She was also a pupil of the Clarendon
Graded school, where she will
be sadlv missed by her school mates.
She called the names of all of the
family before sin; died and told her
mother not to cry for she was going
home. IIer bright smiles and kindly
greetings will be sadlv missed by
those who knew her and loved her.
All that loving hands and skilled
physicians could do was done to arrest
the fatal illness and turn the
ebbing tide of life, but in obedience
to the divine will death claimed its
victim and the grave received its
occupant. Her remains were laid to
rest on Sunday afternoon in the
Clarendon burying ground. The
funeral services were conducted by
her pastor, Uev 10 I Sawyer.

On last Wednesday afternoon,
while on duty as llagman for east

killed by some unknown party

indicated that there had once l)cen
some lire in a hollow gum but no,
sign of anything having been in
there, so it is believed that robbery
was the motive of the murder as
his money was gone and he was
known to have had about ^2f> (JO,
having been paid oil' only a few days
before.
A negro named Ed Brown was
arrested on the following Friday
on suspicion of having committed
the deed and during his examination
his statements were so contradieand
his action so incriminating it
was decided to hoid him and he was
placed under a guard for the night.
But the man who guarded him had
more respect for hissleepy eyes than
he did for tho safety of his prisoner
so ho^fell asleep and while he slept
the prisoner took leg bail and lied to
parts unknown. A large posse
went in pursuit but from last accounts
he had not been captured.
