DEC 10, 1008. The trusts aud corporations are not having such a hard time in their en tanglement in the meshes of the law as one would imagine on reading the lirst act of the groat fareo. The lower courts convict and line theso parasites who wax fat and grow rich upon the industry and necessities of the people and after awhile the higher courts reverses lower ones; and so the farce draws its weary length along and the people receive no redress from the KHll f ti'li i/ilt i rv ( 1./-. ..v/111 O iiivu, III iijj; IU lim: eternal fitness of things, that redress should come. In tin? meantime the trusts and corporations Haunts the red flag of oppression in the faco of the people and continue their system of robbery, bribery and corruption. With them the law has no terror and justice no power. Reports say that the public roads of tho county are generally in a deplorable, and some places in a dangerous condition. The system of working the roads which have been in vogue from time immorial is largely responsible for their condition today. This system, or rather want of system, is the worst heritage of the days when our daddies' daddies went to mill with corn in one end of the sack and a rnnk in n?? other to balancec.it. It is contrary to the spirit of the times and a clog in the wheels of progress. Intelligent observers have long since seen the folly of pursuing the present system of road building and road working with enforced labor. They recognize its inefficiency, its lack of economy and its unsatisfactory results and are turning their attention to the adoption of a more practical and efficient one. In some of the other counties of the State a plan of road building and road making lias been practiced long enough to develope and improve upon its good points and eliminate its bad ones. Wherever it has been tried good permanent roads have invariably been the result and have given entire satisfaction to the officials as well as to the people. The first cost of these roads, it is ti ue, comes high but when the cost of repairs are considered they havo from actual experience proven to be the most economical in the long run. What lias been accomplished along this branch of civic improvement by the pro gressiveuess and enterprise of our KlRtfr ^v.vo wuu uu accomplished by the same forces properly applied in Horrv. The cause is well worth the candle and we hope to seo at no distant day a well and thoroughly or- ! ganized movement in the interest of I improved roads and we are sure that such a movement will accomplish great and lasting good for county j and State. j DIED j On Friday evening at nine o'clock 1 Nov 20th, 1008, Mrs Charity Grillin passed over the river of death at the ripe old age of eighty vears.
