The Stock Law a Curse.
Mr Editor: As I have been a subscriber
to your paper for uearly a
year I wish to say to the people of
Horry tbat 1 grew up au orphuu bov
in that county and that I worked hard
on the fa?tn of Mr W R Uovals, near
Hammond, to earn the money to get
what education I have under the efficient
management of Prof J E
Prince and other educators who
have indelibly impressed their personality
upou the history of Horry
county auy hence I have an abiding
interest in everything that pertains
' to the welfare of the people of the
county which I call home. I am a
* subscriber to the Horry Herald and
every week when 1 get my paper the
lirst tiling I see is the stock law.
Now. Dear Editor, pieaso say to the
people of Horry to stop where they
are at and think befoie they further
write or go on with this stock law
question because it is a curse to the
county and an abomination to the
Creator of heaven and earth. Why
does man want to change the system
of old time stock raising? Why?
1 T '
i cau auswcr it is tor the proper
need of ancient mother wii anil
brotherly love for humanity. That
is what it is and if you will allo.v
i] e to name the balaueu, it is for the
want of eommou sense. The people
of f-Iorry are like this, if one
sees that another is prospering by
reason of his ^uod management
a' " another that man wants to
so.7 tnat neighbor's downfall?and
so they wank?e stock law. Now,
1 don't wu.,tT v one to think that
as I am out of thecouuty that I am
not interested in the welfare of the
people of old Horry for such is not
tue ease. I wish to ask o io question.
What if ,/ou had tnty acres of land
t wqty acres of which was under
cultivation and thirty aires woods
l..nd for your and your ...eitfhbor's
stock to eat Hie j^rass, (\i you had
a deui wife and children to earn a
livelihood aft r you are dead and
? ' rI ll would JU tnilm It would b'1
li?ir for ? jn ity 'o force a law
v jou t .v county to compel your
w.fe at hildren to make a pasture
; id fei. tneir stock and d^bar them
i'.om enjoying the use of their woods I
lend wnich they are entitled to do j
under the laws of the state by roast
u of ownership? The ^retn pas- j
lures lot' stocK should not und
nover were intended to be fenced unci
the stock confined under one enclosure.
Now, readers of the good old
Herald,! hope you will think over
this and will do away with the idea
o! the no fence law in dear old Horry
and never think of or write to the
paper again concerning it. Let
well enough alone, as wo wish to sec
an era of prosperity in our paper
from the people aud not a set back by
the adoption of the no fence law. For
the sake of your neighbors and for
} (Jod sake who made the giocu pas/
-vlures for the stock to feed upon, let
it alone.
Yours for the greatest good to the
greatest number,
P M iRodgers.

OBITUARY.
Petor J Joiner passed from this
life to the life eternal October 2nd,
11)08
Mr Joiner's death was indeed a
sad and unexpected one. He was at
llell's fishery on or near Cherry
Grove Beach and wasVlaying with a
number of boys, i neludin^ his younger
brother, when he fell speechless
to the- ground. In a moment, life
was extinct. The remains were
taken home where a large crowd of
friends and relatives had gathered
to meet the inanimated body of
one ever so loval and true. He was
the son of Thomas and Izzadore
Joiner and having attained the age
of about twenty years, he bad ex
puritjuueii t.ik: greater part or his
life an orphan. While fatherless he
had no lacking of friends and was
respected and regarded bv all who
knew him, as an honest and truthful
spoken hoy.
It was hard, so hard to part with
him but it is not our will, but God's
wdl bo done. The interment took
p'ace at ti. Wampeo burying ground
where a large crowd of friends and
r latives gatnr -ed to pay their last
tribute < ' reLpeot to the dead body
May God comfort and bless the
