If we had a civic league this would be done, and the waste place of Con. way would soon blossom with the rose, the jessamine and other fra* grunt llowors. By the grace of President Roosevelt the last Thursday lias been set apart for a National holiday when people are expected to assemble at their usual placo of public worship and return thanks to Almighty God for his blessings during the year just drawing to a close and for the bountiful harvest which has been gathered, but, in reality, the most of them spend in hunting, fishing and other worldly amusement and in drunkeness and other convivial-' *p jrts. The city fathers are making some decided improvements to the crossings along Main street. Jf they will go a little further and fill in the holes in the sidewalks so that pedestrians will not have to wade through water after each rain, going to and returning from work, they will have done something to deserve the thanks of a lone snfTorinir linn 0 plo. The arc lights of the Conway Light and Power company have boon placed in position and things in general are being gotten ready for the current to be turned on. First it was the telephone, then the electric lights and the trolly lino is the logicl improvement next to follow. A trolly from here to the beach would bo much appreciated by our people and would be well patronized by them. The fortieth State Fair has been held and notwithstanding the very inclement weather which prevailed Wednesday and Thursday, two ol the biggest days, it is said the crowd in attendance exceeded by far that of any previous year within its history The city, so it is said, was packed and jammed and the rate for room going out of sight, ranging in prico from $300 to $1C per night. The exhibits were unsurpassed both as to quality and quantity andwere object lesson* as to the productiveness of South Carolina's soil, tho resources of it* forests and the skill of her artisans The attractions were numerous ant of unusually high order and upor the whole the Pair was better that i1 has been before. CAPITATION TAX A poll tax of one dollar for school purposes is levied upon every male citizen between the ages of 21 and 60 years, able to earn a living, except Confederate veterans over 50 years of age. A capitation tax of fifty cents for school purpoaes is levied on each dog in the county. A payment of three dollars to the County Treasurer before February 28th, 1909 is accepted in commutation of road work for the year 1909.
