arc Some of the Amusements.
Today and tomorrow Couwav will
have on its holiday attire in honor
of the District Convention of the
Knights of Pythias which will be
in session here then. We have all
read of the beautiful story of Damon
and Pythias; of their deep
devotion one to the other and their
unfaltering friendship for each
other. How one excited the displeasure
of the king. was thrown
iuto prison and sentenced to be executed.
It was during the time between
the sentence and the day sot
for the execution that the unparalleled,
not surpassed by even that
which existed between David and
Jonathan, was exhibited. From
this incident the fraternal order of
Knights of L>ythias takes its name
--one of the cardinal principles of
which is Friendship?and since its
organization it has done much to
relieve the sufferings of distressed
brethren.
An eiaborato program Tor the entertainment
of the visiting brethren
has been arranged by the local
lodge and nothing will be left undone
to add joyousuess to the occaeion
and make it memorable one to
the visiting Sir Knights.

CLAIMS SELF DEFENSE.
Mairlstratc A. I?. .lackfton Held the
ImitieM Sunday mid (lic.lury Krturned
Verdict of MnusluiiKliter
Last Monday Hartly Hammond
was brought.toConway and lodged in
jail charged with killing a negro
named Harney Hridget. He is a
young man and a e.i' i/.-n of Horry
county, living in Hloyd's township,
anil was hrmis'lit In iail hv U'o nth
or young men of the neighborhood,
W T Hussvll and C. M. Hammond.
The full details of this matter
could not. be obtained, but from the
best the Herald could learn the Killing
took place in the following manner:
It is said that Hammond in j
company with a negro went to a
town in Marion cninty on Saturday
morning both parties having guns
and both parties bought shells On
the way back they went into the
woods or swamps between Nichob
and Heir IJluli on a burning trip
and while in the woods the tragedy
took place. We have not been informed
of any stand made by Hammond,
but parties who asxed the
negro be,fore bodied say that he said
ho had disputed the word of Mr
Hammond and that Mr Hammond
shot h* 111, Sometime in the evening
on last Saturday Hammond went
out from the swamps and stated
that he had shot the negro in self
defence. He went bank with parties
to look for him and at the spot
where he was found there were manv
signs of a sculllo. The negro was
shot through Hie arm, the bullet
penetrated the breast, and he died
some tiur* Saturday night. jr. is
also statfd there was some whiskey
involved in th*? trouble. Hammond
assisted iho otlu rs in removing the
negro from the woods, and seeing
that he had attention.
On Sunday Magistrate A. P.
I'inUsjnn lu>ld :m imuiAvt. !ind l.lin
jury returned a verdict of manslaughter.
The proceedings have
not yet been tiled, and it was impossible
to paint the exact language
of the finding.
Tlic Stock I.aw.
Yes, since politics has cooled down
it is being agitated again. It must
be an absorbing question to the
farmer, otherwise there would not
bo so much in the paper concerning
it.
I am not replying to any particu
lar individual, but simply stating
facts as I see them If Horry county
will ever need the stock law it is
now, because her best timber is almost
exhausted; and the remainder
which is mostly sap, is being cut and
marketed, and if fencing is made ot
this sap st.ulY it is last only a few
years before it is rotten So wo work
on year in and year out in the same
old way, repairing the same old
fence around that litile farm of ours
because we are not able to fence
with wire, nor never will bo until
we can tear down these old rotten
fences, clear of the hedges and clear
right on until we have a large farm.
It has been said that we htve too
much uncleared laud in the county
to have the stock law vet, and we
will have too much a long time yet
without the stock law.
I believe that if wo hrwl t.hn afenolr
law, within tun years there would
almost twice as many acres of land
under cultivation as there is now
If we had large riches and other
fine grazing and but little
good farming land, then we would
need the fence law, but we have
scores of acres of good farming land
and but very liule extra good grazing
land, this lying muinlv alonjj
side the YVaecumaw river. Farming
is a greater industry than stock
raising is in this county. If another
vote was taken on it, it would not
go as unequal as it did before. Man}
of us have seen the right way.
There is another important reasor
why I want, the stock 1n?*\ and thai
it will keep the misch >us stock
from tearing in the ti !.| and damaging
the crop* 1 ? ?, ' i most ol
us have realiz . b 1 v that an>
man, who is not wining to take cart
of his own stock, and koep then
from damaging his neighbors is not
willing to do what is right.
Boys, I don't believe it is a sin tc
pasture stock, do you? So lets work
hard for the stock law, and when
w?* get ib lets raise something tc
feed our stock on. [ believe w(
can do this and i? wo do, I do not
see any wrohg in it.
L. M, Hardee.

3DAY, OCTOBER 22, 1908.
Tlic Circus.
Coles Bros. Circus L'ave one proformance
here last Friday, and Conway
had on? of the largest crowds
that has gathered here in a number
of years. It is claimed that their
tents will seat 10,000 00 peaplc, it
this is correct, there were at least
? ight thousand people under the
canvas. Several coaches full of
people, were brought in by the Conway
Coast & Western ttailrnad.
One train from Myrtle Beach and
another from Ay nor.
This Circus in traveling is generally
made up of three trains, but it
traveled in sections in coming into
Conway on Thursday night. The
lirst section of the train, containing
something over half of the twenty
three cars,arrived in Conway about
half past nine o'clock and waited
until the other section arrived about
twenty minutes later. The Circus
people unloaded the ears at once
along Main Street, and next morning
by sun-rise some of the tents were
up, and the open lield around the
court house presented a scene of
busy life. There was the usual
large crowd of people to see them
unload the animals, and the public
square and streets near by were
pae.Ked with people during the morning
while the large tents were going
ill) :ii,d cither :li*im 11 iremeii I s. Iw>imr
made.
There was a parade at 10 o'clock,
but a parade in a small town does
not amount to very much. This
pirade only went around one square
but it was watched with interest by
the entire crowd The doors of the
big show were opened atone o'clock
and the performance began at two
o'clock, and the intervening one
hour was taken up in looking at the
inimals in the menagerie. The
performance lasted for two hours,
and there was something taking
place in each of the three rings
nearly all the time, Some of the
features were very striking and
there were wonderful features of
skill and strength without number.
They had advertised to havq two
performances in Conway, but they
declined to have a performance at
night on the ground that the crowd
would not be sullicicnt to warrant
them in the expense.
In one of the sid\? shows was a
game of chance, which as usual, was
very much patronized by some of
the people, and it seems that they
lost without a single exception,
j here was also a number of ticket
sellers who worked slight of hand
tricks in changing money. Some of
this was accomplished while selling
tickets to a customer and others
lost live or ten dollars in simply
receiving change for a ten or twenty
dollat bill that the ticket seller
would want changed. The people
who were thus cheated out of their
money could not get hold of the
ollieialsof the law until after the
big performance was over, then
they employed an attorney and as
the circus hands were busy hauling
the large wagons down tin; main
street and getting ready to load
them on the cars, the she rill and
several constables stepped up and
seized the entire outfit. Those
who brought legal proceedings were
Messrs 11 M nardce, 11 B I'oythros
11 H Floyd, R C Hamilton, VViliie
Page, M J Bullock, J M Marlow,
W J Bruton, K R Singleton and
S F Gasque. When the sheriff held
up the operations of the circus
people, they at once went to tho
1 Manager who went to the lawyer's
office, and in about one hour he
1 paid the amount claimed by these
various claimants, which was $115 2f>
After this the loading of tho cars
proceeded and by half past nine
o'clock the trainscarrying the show
had left. Tho heaviest loser amocg
these who brought legal proceedings
against the show was ./ M
: Marlow, who was tricked out of
' $h(). ft is not believed that the
: manager of the show is responsible
morally for this robbery, but the
wrong was accomplished by em
ployeos of tho show, who were no
; doubt working for their own ends.

Some of our boys who attended
the show last week were "done up"
by the wheel of fortune. You can't
beat a fellow at his own game.
Most of the farmers are through
feathering cotton and have turned
their attention to sowing oats.
The patrons here seem to he much
pleased with their teacher and Miss
Jay is much pleased with her surroundings,
and all the children speak
in the highest terms of the teacher,
but the sea does not always run
smooth. One evening last week the
keen eye of Miss Jay discovered two
of the boys whispering, and as a
punishment she required them to
remain in after school and write a
composition on behavior in school.
We note that the stock law agitation
has started up again, and
we hope that it will be conducted on
a high plane Let each writer give
J a plausible reason for Ins opinion.
We like to read the articles of U. Li
Scarborough and A. L). Jackson for
the stock law and M. J. Liullock and
Mr Stanley for tho continuation of
the fonce. Let us all be reasonable
and open to conviction and not be
too quick to criticise the other fellow,
especially when we have 110
reason for so doing. The people in
this section are hot ready for the
stock law as the turpentine and
timber interest has been "the go"
for tho past several years and the
farms have consequently been neglecied.
