THUUSDAY, JULY 1(1, 1008.
That politics was an important*
and wo would not. miss it far by add
ing tho loading feature of the recent
%report of the grand jury is n self
evident proposition. It takes no
provorbial "Philadelphia Lawyer"
to road between the linos in order to
arrive at this conclusion. The oar
9marks of the tricky politician is too
plain to bo mistaken even by the most
thought less or indifferent ro.uler. All
the way through, from beginning to
end the ''Italian hand" can bo traced
with unerring precision.
In the first place it took fourteen
columns of 8 point type to say that
some of the county officers of Horry
were careless in the discharge of
their duties. Mark you, according
to the cat d of a member of the investigating
(?) committee, no defalcation,
no embezzlement, no misappropriation
of funds, no malfeasance
inofiicois charged ? simply carelessness
and that's all?and yet it
took about 2(?8 inches in 8 point type
to tell the people of I lorry that
some of their officers were not incompetent
but careless. We submit,
as a matter of fact, that this could
have been told in a more intelligent
way in considerable less space and
the necessity of issuing a card
explaining the true intent and
meaning of the report would have
been obviated. The can', itself, had
it hcon substituted for the report,
would have explained the situation
more succinctly and the character
of no faithful servant of tho pcoplo
would liavo been besmirthed.
Thin, again, why was tho management
of a few of tho olliees criticized
in the midst of a hoi political cam
paign, while that of others was carried
over until tho la:-1 term of tho
court for tho year is held, which is
tho proper term for tho linal presentment
to be made? Why this unseemly
haste to make bones of some
and llosh of others?
Wo are informed that there are
today live blind timers in Conway
where there was one this time lastyear.
My Clod! can this bo true?
Where is tho imported monstrosity
who was to ' oat 'em alive' ? Echo
answer where! In the meantime
the haw and Order hengue is draped
in mourning, virtue weeps in
shame and the devil is holding carvial
in high places.
