INHUMAN TREATMENT,
A Clillcl Allowed to I>le Without
Receiving Medical Attention.
Never in the history of Socastec,
in the opinion of this writer, lias
thore occurred an incident which
brought about more general excitement
than the one to which we are
going to refer, and as there has boon
quite a lot of comflnent on this subject
in our section 1 am going to ask
the Editor of the flora Id for space
to make known to its readers the occurrence
and thereby possibly enable
us to get something of their views
along this line.
The following is a brief sketch of
tho incident: '
Some few months ago a little girl,
whose parents were living in Florida,
came to Socastee with her mother
to visit relatives. While out here
she was taken sick at the home of
Me D Brown, at Enterprise. She
continually grew worso, while nothing
so far as medical aid was cDecerned,
was done for her relief.
Some of the relatives and neighbors
called to see the child and pro^Mucd
to do something for her, calla
doctor if necessary. But the
^^mild's parents, and the family where
she was, belonged to the Holiness
sect and refused to accept of any
medical aid, not ovi n allowing the
child to be bathed in warm water, as
they claimed to bo trusting God for
tho healing of the child, and thai to
givo it any medicinal aid would not
be iu accordance with the Bible.
And just here I will say that wo
were informed that the man of the
house said that neither doctor nor
medicine should enter his house.
Iii the meantime, however, the
Saints, as they call themselves, gathered
at the home of Mr Brown to
hold services and pray for the child,
annotating her with oil. After praye'',
which continued about an hour,
one of the preachers arose to announce
to the audicucc that he had
received the witness from Clod,
through the Holy Spirit, that the
child would be healed. But as the
child seemed to be suffering intensely
just at this timo, of course, he
could not say she was already healed
but went on to explain that when
Christ was on earth he would sometimes
heal a person instantaneously
while again it might embody a space
of sometime. Continuing ho said,
4<l know that the child will be better
in the morning, as T have the witness
of God for it."
But the child continued to grow
worse during the night, and about
4 p in., the next day breathed her
last.
In the mean timo tho father of the
child was telegraphed for and arrived
after the child was buried. He
expressed his thanks to all his good
brethrou and sisters who so kindly
cared for his child and prevented any
doctor being called and any modicinc
being giveflf'Saying that they did
liiblo like,' and just as he, himself,
would have done had ho been here.
And he further said according to
the understanding the writers, that
all who had ever practiced medicine
were nothing less than the servants
of the devil, and all who used and
upheld it were the devil's imps.
Now, Mr Reader, what do you
think of a statement of this kind,
anyway? Aod what steps, if any, do
you think would bo proper for a people
surrounded by a sect who advances
a doctrine of this kind?
In our minds, the above statement
is one of the atrtsl^bsu ciU.frftlr
ever fell fron^^k^Tips of any man.
"ftHd bgaTn we think that in this
instance, if it had been a grown person,
and using their own judgment,
an acting according to their own
feelings, had refused medical aid,
and died, it would not have seemed
so unreasonable. But to allow an
innocent child te lie, without help
or aid, and finally die, seems too
much for us?out, yet, 'twas done.
And according to our own knowledge
some of these same folks, in
whose care the child was, have called
doctors for themselves since belonging
to this sect, but, of course,
not until this seemed to be the only
chance to preserve life,
Observers.
