timber camps near Gun tors Island,
last week) was severely mashed

county jail one day last week under
a charge of breaking in the store at
Pine Island. On last Thursday morning
all that remained to show he had
been there, was a hole in the roof oi
the old jail and a string of old dirty
blankets hanging from the hole over
the eaves toward the ground. Ho

have not recaptured him as

J. D. Oliver of Greenwood was in

The Easter entertainment at Union
church was a grand success. The
children acted their part remarkably
well, and we regret that the
church was not large enough to hold
moro than half of the people. There
was. about three, hundred people
present. Much credit was given
Misses Mary Dusenbury, Mamie
Jordan and Jessie Dusenbury for
their success in carrying out the
program without a hitch.
We note Farmers' suggestion that

reply thereto Now, if the bettor
class of people can get a better man
that will do better work and put the
roads in better lix, it will be the
better plan as the supervisor now
gets better pay and this section here
presents the name of W. L. Single1on
as the better man, who will have
better roads and better bridges.
If Mr Holt had gotten bettor pay he
would probably made a better sup ervisor.

AN ENTHUSIASTIC BRYaNITE.
The Gcnilcm an from Nebraska Is
the Saviour of the Kcpuftlic
Editor Herald:- In this critical
crisis of the United States of A titer
ica, we recognize the necessity of
sober, honest and careful deli bora
Vion on the part of men who sway
the public mind and public sentiment
Never in the history of the
nation have questions of such vital
importance to the American liepublic
arisen as now confronts each
and every citizen of thisgnvernmcnt.
We recognize the fact that it was indeed
a great undertaking for the
handful of Americans to defy the
Fatherland and unfurl to the world
the Star Spangled Hanner and plac '
the Goddess of Tdberty on tho nigh
est point attainable by mankind
Hut knowing that their blood would
bo the price of their patriotism, they
fearlessly performed their duty to
the young nation and to their posterity.
We have lived and enjoyed
this liberty for many decades. The
oppressed of every nation have Hocked
to us as a haven of rest?as a
city of refuge?to a land of love and
liberty. The emblems of this American
liberty has assumed great proportions,
and today tho blazing sun
of tho heavens never sets on this
American emblem of an independ
ent hninn fnr n.11 1 nw nt-kiflimr iil\??>??r
loving people.
All natious point to us with love
and fear They love us for the
principles of the broad platforms of
American liberty, they fear us because
these principles have made
us the greatest nation of all of Clod's
favored climes. From this view-1
point, who is he who can fold his
hands while permanant danger
threatens to destroy the pillows,
the very foundation upon which
rests the principles of American liberty.
Who is he who can sell his birth
right for a moss of potoge? Who is
he whoregards a few measly dollars
for prosent necessities of more value
to hitn than the principles of government
that has made him ono of God's
greatest works? A traitor of the
deepest dye, a being unworthy of
this citizenship, a self confessed
criminal of the highest crime that
cau be committed against a government
that has done so much for U19
human race. If the accepter of such
funds commit treason against his
country, against himself and against
his posterity, what shall we say of
him who will furnish this fund to
buy in open market the homes, the
lives and liberties of the American
people? Treason! Treason! Treason!
If these corruption funds are not
being used to purchase votes to buy
Legislatures and to sway the courts
whv has it became neees-mri/ f.w
different Legislatures and for tho
greatest law making bod\ of men on
earth to enact laws in reference to
the prohibition of such contributions?
The time is at. hand when the people
of this nation have got to do one of
two things, viz. to remember that
you are a man to exercise your suffrage
as a free citizen, to support
such men as cannot be swayed by
any consideration whatever, io forget
for one moment that he is the
custodian of your most sacred trust
and to betray this trust would make
hicn a criminal and a convict. Is
there no such men in those days of
such dire need of them? Has all men
gone astray? Does all men worship
LJaal? Is there no balm in Gilead?
Second, to continue to neglect to
exercise your suite rage as a citizen
and refuse to vote at the election,
saying as a great many do, that it is
no use to vote as the money power
of the country will prevail.
Of course it will, if you will stay
at home on election day and surrender
your sutTrage. It is indeed
a deplorable fact that at present the
power of capital has the country by
the throat. The President, his Cabinet.
Congress and the llniiod Ktntnw
Senato are mostly interested in corporations.
Capital has been centralized
into groat corporations,
which control the industries of the
country, driving out small and independent
industries and thereby
destroying competition in business
corporations by the enactment of
laws favorable to them and detri- ]
mental to individuals can well af- I
ford to spend a few millions to have |
such men elected as will do their]
bidding, hence the corruption fund, j
It is also a deplorable fact that, the
same hand that holds the monoy of'
the country has an iron grip upon
the necessaries of life; for instance,
the meat packers and others. They
can cause a financial panic at their
pleasure, and at the same time raise I
the price of food stuiTs. In other
words, they can double the purchas
ing value of money and at the samt>
time raise the price of the goods
manufactured by their monopoly
fostered factories. This system
works a hardship only on the consumers,
or in other words, the bone
and sinue of the country
As an illustration, in the critical
coudition of the country in the middle
of a panic, the meat packers have
run up the price of their meats
thirty per cent higher than they
were when there was plenty of money
in circulation. Mr. Voter, do you

Made Arrangements Last Tuesday

The county otllcers have not moved

the committee of the ^rand jury eni<n?^ed
in examining the county of
licos had directed the ollicers to
move into the new buildings and
that the Ueys had been turned over
to them by the commission. On investigation
it was found that some
lif till' f ?tl i i * ? 1*?4 lllilt'lMir lll'IMl'l
rations t:> move their records and
furniture down to the new otlices
Col Quattlebaum, a member of the
commission, was absent owin# to
sickness in his family, but in the
afternoon Gen J. IV Derham came
in from Green Sea, and before any
?f the oilicers had moved, it was
dated to them tliat tho commission
had not as yet received the buildin#
from Mr 11 P Little, the contractor
and that the commission
could not allow the move to be made
until this should be done.
The situation just now in re#ard
to the matter is as follows: The
architect has accepted the buildin#
in writin#, or has so informed the
the secretary of the buildin# commission,
but since that time there
iias been no meetin# of the commission.
A mcetin# is necessary
I on the part of the commission in order
to receive the work and settle
with the contractor. In this condition
of things it would not have been
exactly proper for the oilicers to #o
into the new quarters, and the matter
was accordingly deferred.
Some of the oilicers were dissappointed
it seems when they learned
they could not move. Jailer J C
llruton had #one down early in the
day and swept Jout the new jail,
xpoctin# to move in before ni#ht.
