Sea- r siotiH in Presence of l a rare Gath- L crinjr. With (beautiful and Im- j pressivc Ceremonies , Last Sunday at the hour of 3:30 p. m., Lakeside cemetery was the ) scene of a beautiful ceremony, the . Qccabiou being the unveiling of the luLmumcnt erected by the Woodmen ' or the World to the memory of a de- ' parted brother, Mr George Robert 1 Sessions. The ceremonies was car-1' ried out in the presence of a large 1 congregation of people, relatives and 1 friends of the deceased. 1 State manager W. L. Slaughter, 1 of York county and J. R. Drake of Darlington, one of the best field 1 workers of the order, were present and assisted. Mr Slaughter holds I an important position in the order I lie is a member of the legislature J1 from York county. His address de livered at the monument was complimented on all hides. 1' The weather was very favorablel for the occasion and the crowd in attendance was as largo as was ever seen hero at an event of this kind. The procession fo-mcd at the Masonic hall and marched to the cemetery gates and was joined there by tin; bereaved family. The cere | moi y occupied about forty-live minutes. Box Supper tit Cool Sprliijrs. Mr. Editor:?Wo ask space through your valuable columns to report our box supper. As advertised through your paper, we met at Cool Spring about eight o'clock. The young and old, married and single, and all grades of nice cakes, and boxes were coming in, while every young man was wondering, whose box will I get. At the time appointed a short address of welcome was made by the committee, after which Mr J G Floyd sold lho boxes to the highest bidder, some bringing two dollars and seventy live cents, while none sold for less than forty cents per box. Soon the committee appointed Miss Sallio Jones and Miss Annie J\ I I Hill bl I UllUUM' il^i lli LliU M1U DUI/llC class manner of the free schools. And the cake was to be given to the side that paid most for it. Just here allow me to say that the cake was a very nice one, having been prepared by Miss Hattic Jones J3oth sides were good workers and soon ihe cake was bid over one hundred dollars, and for good feelings to both sides they compromise', paying over $52.10 each, making a total of $104 20 which the cake sold for. The amount raised was near $125.00 which seems as if the money panic is over. SVe congratulate the committee Miss Hatue Jones and Miss Hattie Shelly for the graceful manner in which they conducted it. They have been working hard for the new buukling which has been started, and we feel now that they have accomplished their purpose. There was quite a number of young ladies frjm a distance who took part, among those present were the Misses Jones' and Barnhill, of Mullins, and Miss Anna King, ofSocastec There was not as many candidates present as was expected, but Supervisor Holt better keep a keen eye on Mr Floyd. He's a vote winner. Visitor. ? Death of an Infant. Hum ice infant of Mr and Mrs V , ^JHarreteon, of Nichols, S. In view of her early appearance here tlie following press notices of her work will be of interest to her friends: (Bristol Herald, Bristol, Tenn ) "Miss Doak has a voice o' unusual range and wonderful beauty, and the numbers which she gave showed a splendid adaptability of mood and manner to the sentiment of the songs which she sang. Miss Doak gave two groups of songs which were especially beautiful, and she is perhaps at her best in such exquisitely tender and pathetic melodies as "Obstination" and ' Oh, that we were maying." In manner Miss Doak is charming and is not unlike Adalina Patti in appearance, hav ing the dark hair and eyes which belong to the irmous Italian singer, and an exce: ngly graceful and gracious stage manner." (At Durham, N. C ) "A very select and most appro ciative audience greeted this young southern vocalist in a song recital at the Conservatory of Music last evening. While the estimates formed of her ability in advance, were high, sno lar surpassed mo expectation of thoso most interested in her success here, and won for herself the strongest encomiums from the best judges of music in the city. Apart from the superior endowments and equipment, Miss Doak possess most attractive personal charms and her graceful stage presence must instantly win the favor of the audience." . ? It is possible that the hotel at Myrtle Beach will be opened to entain guests the coming season. In calling attention to this little >v plav in the comedy of errors it is iot the intention of the Herald to ihrow cold water upon any part the Hoard of Trade took in the matter. LY> the contrary that body is deservng of uustiniod praise as it is an jvidence of its zeal in the promotion >f enterprises having for their obloet the upbuilding of town and jountry and a commendable deternination to neglect nothing which ( iromises to prove a factor in the \ maud scheme of the ilevelooment . )f ourcomtnercial and industrial rc>onrocs. The Herald is gl id that j die Hoard of Trade proved itself ^ qual to the emergency uud did what L t,hey did do so well and so promptly. ? Hut, however, from the lesson we ^ :;an draw a wholesome moral, and ; nne that would be to the interest til both Conway and Horry to give | heed to. We must depend largely * upon our own exertions and capital . for 'the development of our resources. Wo must first give an earn , e->t of our faith in the future of j Horry and show our confidence in our claims that South Carolina is the garden spot of the world and Horry county is the garden spot of South Carolina, by using our money as well as our inllucnco in building up some enterprise which appeals the strongest to the judgment of our people, There is no question about necessary funds, neither is there a doubt about the willingness of the citizenship to act well their part, but the trouble is that each one waits on thoir neighbor tako the lead There seems to be a want of self reliance, a want of confidence in one's self and the consequence is that nothing much is being done along the line of progress. Tt is absolutely necessary for us if wo hope to see new enterprises spring up to go down into our own pockets and help establish them. We invite attention to the card of Mr W J Hendricks announcing his candidacy for County Supervisor: Mr Hendricks is one of our most prominent citizens and heretofore has been faithful in discharge of his public and private duties, and if elected he will do his best to improve the roads of the county. The Masonic hall caught on (ire last Saturday evening, evidently from a spark from a passing railway locomotive. Prompt action on the part of the fire department saved the duilding and perhaps a general conflagration. Many of the tax executions recently issued aro being paid. It seems that in some eases the parties had overlooked their taxes or thoy would have been paid promptly. Notice to Overseer*.
