For sometime past there have been
railroads and rumors of railroads in
which the neopleof this county arc
taxing much interest. Indeed each
succeeding day brings to lightsome
Tiling now regarding the railroad
situation as viewed from an optimistic
standpoint. Tho concensus of
opinion of those who are on the
ground and witness the events as
they are developed seem to lie that
something important is going to
happen in railroad circles and that
the day of ''great things" promised
for Conway by railroad oHici.ils is
about to dawn. Anvhow there is
something in the wind, but just
. what the something is the Herald is
as much in the dark as any one else
except those who control the railroads.
Tho Herald, however, gives
the following as a true index of the
railroad situation as it now exists in
I lorry and its readers can draw
their own conclusions:
Brunswick county. N C., has voted
a debt of $HO.OOO to help build a railroad
from South port, that county,
to connect with the Gardner A Lacy
Co., which is reaching out from the
Con way,'Coast and Western railroad
at the Chaingang Shanty, ii. this

Conway to bo an important oily
on some trunk lino, and the signs
of the times all point toward the
realization of this dream.
Southport is undoubtedly the ob
jeetive southern terminus and Biasto'.
Tenn., the northern, of a railroad
which will give a water out

Southport ofTers the advantages of a

of the largest railroad systems in the
South are looking Southportward ?
the Seaboard Air Line and tim Atlantic
Coast Line The Seaboard
proposes to go from Southport to
Wilmington, thence over the Caro
lina Central on to Tennessee. As
we see it the Atlantic Coast Line will
toltow the coast to Conway. It already
owns the Con way, C.ast and
Western railroad?a child of Mr K
A Burroughs?which starts at Myrtle
Beach, passes through Conway
and ends at Aynor, in Galivants

The Gardner & Lacy .people arc
building a railroad which con-|
nects with the Conway, Coast
and Western road at the Chaingang
Shanty. It has been completed t<.
Wnmnw and is building on toward
Little River, The road bed is un
usually good,the rails are heavy steel

to Anderson (the Superintendent ol
the Atlantic Coast Line). Then the
Bruswiek eountv people , with their
money, will extend it on to Southport.
The Eddy Lake people are building
r road from that place along the
Horry side of the Little Pee Dee
river to Galivants Ferry, leaving a
gap of only a few miles between Aynor
and Galivants Ferry.
The question is whether the west
prn connection will be at Marion,
Cades or Sumter, at either of which
places connection can be made over
what is known as the C's.
The Cjast Line people are as
dumb as a lobste" and the Seaboard
people are as silent as a mud turtle,
but the Herald man is confident
that the "missing link" will be
found at Cades and Conway will be
in the swim in any event.
