Judge John Holt, went to Georgetown
last week having been subpoenaed
there as a witness in a big
land case. The attorneys wanted
certain of tlx* old records in his ollice
pertaning t.o the estate of the late
Samuel Hell. The Judge returned
the middle of the week, as the ease
had been laid over to a later day.

Next Friday is the last day in
which to pay State and county taxes
without the penalty, after which

gnashing of teeth by those who
have let the day of grace slip by
without having interviewed Treasurer
McDermott. He is an accommodating

Itev Moses Pridgon filled his reg-t
ular appointment hero Saturday and
Sunday and a large crowd attended

We have one of the most flourshing
Sunday school's that has over
been at Mt Olive and we are hoping
that it will get better and better.

It appears by newspapers that Mr

liourn, who were married hero on
February 15th, as a result of lojjul

The matter created a sensation in
the town at the time when Miss
Jessie llourn appeared before Magistrate
J. N. Jeurettc and swore out
i warrant for seduction against Mr
ox and constables were sent to arrest
him. This was a short time before
the February term of court, and
the young man for reasons which
were suflieient with his friends, refused
to comply witii her request to
marry her and end the proceedings.
Finally, a few days before court, the
couple were married at the board
ing house of Mr S. C. Richardson.
Very little was said in the newspapers
about the matter at the time
nut of tenderness, perhaps, for the
father and mother of t he young man,
Mr Joe Cox, the father being one of
llorrv's leading citizens and his
wife one of the best ladies of the
and. It was a hard blow to them
md they had the sympathy of all in
the trouble that had befallen their
nabv son. Asa result of the marriage
the warrants were of course
withdrawn, and no more was thought
nf the matter until the following appeared
in the Thomasville papers

appeared the following

"A sad chapter from the seamy
side of life, was unrolled to ihe gaze

yesterday. It deals with lie
travel, desertion and dark passions,
while the picture is relieved bv the
kind elpirity of Thomasville people,
and the hope of a brighter future for
a young woman.
'On Wednesday night a young
couple giving their names as Thos.
(-ox and wife of South Carolina arrived
in Thomasville and went to the
railroad hoarding house wherothey
spent the night. On one of the early
trains yesterday morning the man
left, and the young woman was here
alone and without funds. To bystanders
whose attention was attracted
by her tears she told a pitiful
story.
"She lived in a little South Carolina
town, an orphan, and met the
man several months ago. It was the
old story of betrayal, ending in ?t
reluctant marriage, on the fifteenth
of February. The couple then started
for Florida, where the man said
he had iinployment in a saw mill.
In Savannah he attempted to desert
his sixteen year old wife, but she
learned his intention and prevented
It.

girl was loft alone and friendless.
Charitable people took her in hand,
and the secretary of the Y. M. C, A.
raised enough money to send her to
Macon. She will go there today in
charge of Miss Annie Heath, deaconess
of the Methodist church, and will
enter the Door of Hope, where she
will be cared for, and placed in the
way of making an honest living.
In the issue of Match8th appeared

to end her unhappy life by the
laudanum route that night. A bottle
of the drug was found in her possession
and she admitted that she

"Miss Heath and Miss Roberts
look Mrs Cox to Macon yesterday,
leaving on the 9:25 train. It was
feared that she might do herself
violence in her troubled state ol
mind and both of these good ladies
accompanied her to watch over her.
The case is one of the saddest that
Thomasville has ever known.
These articles of course only
present one side of the affair. for
there are two sides to it as there
is always to everything The younji
man was literally forced to marry
hor it seems oy reason of several
warrants that had been issued in
this case, and some of such ending o!

noirro woman, was found
dead in her bed at her home in Conway
last Friday morning. There
was no sijrn of foul play, but her
people insisted upon an inquest,
and in the absence of coroner II. II.
Burroughs, magistrate .1. N. Jenrotte
held an inquest over the remains.
The following jury was summoned:

I). 1*. Green, V. 1). Johnson,
M. J. Grant, J. C. Bruton, jr., Jno.
Holt, Arch Wilson, M. W. Cook,
W. B. Woodward, Jos, Circuis and
W. L. Houscnd. They listene d to
the evidence of sevorel witnesses
from which it appeared that the wo
man sutVered from heart disease,
and there was nothing to show any
foul play in the case. Thev returned
a verdict stating that she came
to her death from natural causes.

Mrs A. E. McNeill died at her
home near Grahamville in Horry
county, March 8th, 1007, avfed 74
years. She was buried at Salem M.
10. church of which she was a mcm1
ber. She came to this county several
years a^o with her husband. Dr

small children to care for, which
