Wo have heard somewhere and
soiru how?we have forgotton the
first and do not remember the second?that
the high officials of the
Atlantic Coast Line ?those that sit
high up in the councils of the system?promised
"great things for
Con .vay." He this as it may, this
muc 1 is certain, the officials of this
rail load paid Conway several pleasant,
if not profitable, visits last
summer. They did not come after
the sun went down, and unlike the
Arabs folded their tents and silently
stole away before the sun was up.
Bui an hour or so after noon and
in their brass trimmed car and it was*
after one of these visits that the
rumor 01 tins promise was made
known, To whom it was made to we
are not informed, and what particular
incident happened during that
visit to call forth that promise we are
equally in the dark. It could not,
however, possibly been anything the
Hoard of Trade did nor yet through
its efforts, because we did not then
have, nor have we now such a potent
factor through which to work intelligently
and effective))' for the upbuilding
of Conway and the extension
of its trade, neither could it
have been the Busine-* Men's
'League because its functions are essentially
of a private nature relating
almost exclusively to i.usinoss
transactions between creditor and
debtor.
But no matter by whom or to
whom the promiso was made or
whether it was made at all. "there
are great things" in store for Conway
along the linos of railroad and
commercial development unless the
trend of events is no true index of
coming ones That the railroad
people are interested in the future
of Conway is indicated from the fact
that they are active in improving
their holdings in this county and
have shown a deposition to work in
harmony with the business interests
of the town ond county. As wo
have said lime and again and now
repeat with added emphasis, that
the railroad people have put too
much in the improvements here
with the intention of making and
usi ng their roadway only for logging
purpovfts The only reasona
ble and logu al couc'usion to be arrived
at when the nature and class
of work theyhaveand are now doing
is taken into consideration is
that these people are looking furthe?
ahead than we are in this matter,
and intend to do great things fot
Conway, or rather put Conway in a
way to do great things for itself.
What that is. only the rail rood people
know, and the future will dcvelop
