Prohibition of the sale of whiskey,
in so far as Ilorry is concerned, is a
failure. This is apparent to all.
And the preponderance of evidences
shows that it is the same in all the
oth?r prohibition counties.
The sale of bonds for the purpose
of improvements in Conway is being

Capt. Jack Oliver spent Thursday
night and a portion of Friday with
his family in this place. He is. how
at work for the Government on ihe
Waccamaw some fifteen miles above

The train came in Saturday crowded
with passengers who came to
cit the Christmas turkey with relatives
and friends. Among them

The sale of tho Orman mill at
Gurley on 31st inst., affords an opportuntiy
to persons wishing to in
vest in a lumber plant. The machinery
is said to be line and in good order.
A number of line mules with
wagons, carts, etc., complete for the
business.
It N. McArthur, of the Dodson
Printer's Supply Co., was in Conway
last week to assist .the Herald
in selecting much new machinery
and material which tho paper h. s
decided to buy. Mr. McArthur is
an expert printer and knows what
he is about in the matter of the selection
of materials
Onaccountof thelnclement weather
last Thursday the marriage of
Tom Thumb to Miss Sarah Theresa,
daughter of Mr and Mrs Jonathan
Doolittle, was postponed. Tho marriage
ceremony will take place in
tho auditorium of the Burroughs
Graded school in the evening of Januaiy
11th.
It appeals that until recently the
Cemetery Hoard could not make
good title to purchasers of Mpiaros
by reason ot so.no flaw in tin? ordi
nance creating this Hoard. Council
has remieded this defect and the
Hoard can now make perfect title
and as a result many squares have
recently been sold.
Thero will a McAdamized pavement
on Main street and Fourth
aver.up extending the length and
depth of the Kingston hotel building.
Now if the other property owners
on Main street and Third avenue will
extend it to tho Hal L Buck Co.
corner and from there to Nicholas'
corner, on Third avenue, Conway
will have at least two squares of
good pavements.
The Union Stores Company of Carters,
Fla , among the largest retail
general merchandise concerns .in
South Florida, is conducted entirely
by Horry boys, and of course the
concern is making a success. The
latest addition to the force of clerks
is Mr. G. C. Pitman of Box, S. C.
The manager of this thriving business
is Mr. .1. 11. Smith, a son of the
Mayor of Conway,
The case of the State vs. John Turner
for violation of laborer's contract,
under which he was working
this year for U L Daniel, of Finklea,
S. C., was tried at Finklea last Friday
before Magistrate George M.
fowler, Mr. Daniel was represented
by H. II. Woodward and the defendant
plead his pwn ease. The
jury was composed of well-known
men of that community. They found
Turner guilty and he was sentenced
to pay a line of $50 or be confined at
hard labor on the chain gang of the
county for a period of thirty days,
He failed to pay the line and was
committed to the chain gang the
same day.

such men as they can to lit them?"
asked a young man who had been going
through tho experience of changing
his work. "I won't try to answer my
question, but I will tell you a story. I
called upon a manager to talk with
him about a place of responsibility
which I knew he had to offer. lie
seemed taken with me nnd I think bad
his- mind made up to employ me. Finally
bo asked me liow much salary I
would expect.
" 'I should say about $150 a month,'
I answered.
"Immediately his face fell. 'I'm sorry,'
he snhl, 'but I expert to pay $2,500
a year, and I want a $2,500 man.
Good morning.'
"From there I went to Inquire about
another place. Again I seemed to suit,
and we got to the question of wages.
.1 knew the firm was not in the habit
of spending much money. If I was to
get the position I must bid low, and
bo I suggested $125 a month.
" 'I'm sorry,' was the reply, 'but we
can't pay more than $100. I know
you're worth more and the work Is
worth more, but we haven't got the
money to spend, that's all. Good
