> INTERNAL IMPROVEMENTS.
MR. F. A. BURROUGHS TO IMPROVE
STREET NEAR SNOW
HILL.
0 _____
Dividing- the Properties of Mrs
Addle Burroughs and Mr. Arthur
Burroughs---It is to be Widened
and Sewage Pipe Laid.
Work to t>eCommenced at Once'
There is going to b e lively times in
Conway during the next twelve
months along the line of internal
improvements. Already coming
events are beginning to cast their
shadow before, and these vauue and
indefinite shadows are t^Cpnning to
assume form and shape which foretell
us that the people arc alive to
the importance of doing something
toward making the appearance of
Conway attractive to the stranger
within her gates as well as a desirable
j>lace in which to live from the
standpoint of business and health,
as well as from social and moral eon
ditions, and there are movements on
foot, it may be they are only in soak
just at this time, but they are in evidence
nevertheless, which, when
carried to completion^ will make old
Couway a growing an/ progressive
city.
Just now it is the purpose of the
Herald to mention only one of the
many improvements contemplated
in the near future, because this one
is no longer guess work neither, is it
a surmise, hut an actual livinc
fact aud the carrying out of which
means the beginning of other improvements
either by individuals or
>*' as a corporation.
Mr. Frank A Burroughs has asked
the permission of the municipal
authorities to lay a line of pipes
along the Street, from where
it intersects viih Tenth avenue to
Kingston lake. He proposes to close
the deep and unsightly ditches on
both sides, and to widen and otherwise
improve it. Already a row of
poplar trees have been set out on
both sidos of the street and are
growing as nicely as could be ex
E>ected. All of these improvements
o will make at his own expense, the
only thing he asks is the permission
to do so. This has been granted
with the right reserved by tho municipal
authorities to tap these pipes
whenever and wherever it becomes
necessary for the use of tbo sewerage
system of the town, when put
in, which doubtless will be done as
soon as the bonds are sold.
We aro reliably informed that the
improvements of this street will be
commenced immediately after the
holidays are over and business settles
down to normal conditions,
This work will doubtless be an incentive
for others to improve the
streets aud avenues upon whioh
their property faces, and if this is
done, which ought to be the result,
Conway will soon wear a different
appearance than it now does.
The Burroughs property in that
portion of the town is most admirably
adapted for residential purpose.
It is high and level, with a natural
drainage on all sides, consequently
healthy, and if this property is
ever cut up into lots and placed on
the market it will become to be the
prettiest and most populous part of
the town, but, however, as it is the
improvements contemplated there
are in the right direction, and Mr.
Burroughs is to be commended in
undertaking them.

Wofford Collcjre Notes.
Everything quiet on the Campus.
For the past few da3's the boys have
been \oiy busy preparing for the
Christmas examinations. The principal
topic of conversation has
been them The words "Wonder
will I pass?" have been very common
among the students. The last
examination was given Friday morning,
after which the boys ieft for
their respective homes to" spend the
Christmas holidays. The railroad
company furnished a special train to
take the Wofford boys to Columbia.
Tnll t'iro jo ill voniwn nn t.t?o nf
January. Boys are expected to be
here on the 2nd.
The writer is from Ilorry and loves
his county, but has decided to spend
his short Christmas holidays in
Spartanburg. All the other boys
from Horry who are attendiug Wofford
have gone home, excepting Watus
Dawsey, who will remain in the
city.
It is told that when one of the
Horry boys, who had retired for the
evening, was informed that he could
co home the next day, got up and
prepared himself for this long desired
journey (of course the train
wasn't due until the uext day at
10:30.) He wanted to see 44 Pa" and
"Ma" and didn't intend to be left.
I am very glad to know of the increased
interest in education that
Horry has taken. Hope her representation
will be large in WctTard
next year. 1 don't think any father
could make a mistake by placinc his
boy in the care of this great institution,
as long as such men as Drs.
Carlisle and Suyde** ha\ e it in charge.
Many country schools do not prepare
boys for college. Where that
is the case, a most excellent preparatory
course can be found in Woll'ord
College Fitting school, which is under
the wise management of Prof,
A. M. Dupree.
The boundry of WofTord is very
great. Tt has boys here from every
county in the State and also mauy
southern states are represented. It
does not stop hero but reaches to
the Islands of the sea. and takes in
two Japanese.
The writer would like to pause
long enough here to explaiu something
of th character of these two
Japanese students. If these two
boys are a fair representation of the
Japanese race, then there is no wonder
at the great progress that this
race has made. We at once can see
the reason why they were so successful
in the late war with Russia.
These students have become Christians
since coming to America, and
now are of the purest character.
They are very bright and industrious
and stand high in their classes.
They are highly respected by
the faculty and student body. After
completing their education, they
will return to their native country
as missionaries.
I was very glad to have the pleasure
of seeing Messrs. Baker, Martin
and Hooks, all of Clemson College,
as they passed Spartanburg Friday
evening, to spend the Christmas holidays.
The Baptist State Convention
meet here some time ago. This was
a great treat worthy of taking in.
The talk of Mr. Taj lor, a returned
Missionary from Brazil was very interesting
and instructive.
The writer would be pleased if the
different correspondents over the
county would move up a little. Let
us hear from you more often. Will
not some one take the place of the
deceased correspondent at Nixonville?
A merry Christmas and a happy
new year to all the Herald readers.

There were no really serious accidents
during Christmas, but somt
were painful, and some hard to
explain. The following are some
of them.
A two wheel cart and lot of rubbish
was piled up in front of W. 1C
Uritt's store, and the front of the
stores of the other merchants wore
variously ornamented with odds and
ends.
The Christmas tree at the old
School house was largely attended
and many received nice presents,
while others were not so fortunate
however the crowd was in a good
humor and every thiug passed olT
pleasantly. :

Dr. C. J. Epps closed the drug
store about 4 o'clock fastening up all
the doors and windows and leaving
no one in the store. When he returned
later in the evening, he found a
drunk negro lying with his head
under the soda fountain as if he were
seeking soda water with which to 1
temper off. The negro could not
explain how he got in the store, and
no one seems to know.

Editor Herald:?I will say to the
readers af the dear old Herald that
I am still in the Master's work. I
closed a meeting some time ago at
Maple Baptist church with ten conversions
and sixteen additions tojthe
church. From there I went to Good
Hope where we had a good meeting
and at this meeting there were forty-three
conversions, and twentyfive
were for baptism. I am now at
Bethlohem, nine miles from Conway,
on the road leading from Conway on
Oog Bluff, I commenced on Sunday
night and at this time (Wednesday
morning) there have been sixteen
conversions and seventeen additions
to the church. We thank God, people
are being saved. Oh! may we
as Christians in the Waccamaw Association
lift up our prayers to God
for the salvation of unsaved men
and woman.
I want to say to the committee
that was appointed at the Association
to AKRist the Hcv. Mp.Cn.ins t.n
attend school aud collect all ycu can
for him, and all who pledged to send
in what can be raised to Bro. J. C.
Spivey the treasurer, of the Association,
at once. Wo want the funds
to go to Bro. Spivey, so we can get
Bro McCains in school. All who will
assist this worthy young man to prepare
himself to preach the gospel,
send something to Bro. Spivey for
him.
May God bless the Editor of the
dear old Horry Herald. We feel
proud of our paper as it is the best
in the State for the price. With
best wishes to all, I remain

College has been sending to the
most important places in the State,
that is, where it was thought the 1
greatest good could bo accomplished,
a car containing spocimens of
some of the most important work
ilone by the students of the college,
and along with this car it has sent
out several of its professors, experts
in mechanism, in the dairy, in agriculture,
in stock raising and other
indnstrics taught at this college,
who lecture upon the branches over
which they preside Heretofore,
this car, and these iectures have
been of much interest and profit to
those farmers who have taken the
time and trouble to visit it and hear
them. The car is a little minaturc
world within itself, for here is seen
the finished article produced from
the raw material, and the lectures
instruct those as to the manner of
production as well as other matters
concerning scientific as well as practical
agriculture.
This car and those professors wore
here in Conway the first part of this
year, but bo it said, not the indifference
of our people, however, but for
the lack of sufficient notice and pub- *
