tA Letter from Ocoriltt
There is not much farming going
on through this part of the Slate.
We are only about twenty-eight miles
from Florida and I can't brag on this
part of the Stute. although Georgia
is a great old State as far as timber,
grain, coal and phosphate are concerned.
There are also some tine
hunting and fishing grounds through
here, but T never will turn my back
on Florida, for she is noted for
her trucking, her game, her fishing
and her old ancient curiosities. I
caino from Florida to this place
fourteeen months ago to do mill
work, but it is my intention to put
in a crop of truck in Florida in the
spring of 1907. I am a native of
Horry county South Carolina and I
love my old State and county, where
1 was born and raised, and 1 will be
truo to her until I die. 1 left Horry
in 1893, and landed at Walthourville,
Ga., on my 21st birthday, and I have
been back to the old homo twice si nee
then. 1 have been over a great portion
of Georgia and over a great
portion of Florida and in the latter
State nearly all the tropical fruits
grow luxuriantly. 1 lived in the old
ancient city in St. Augustine for
about four years and found it thn
most pleasant and the healthiest
place! have struck in all ny travels.
They have winter resorts there.
It is beautifully situated right at the
inlet of two rivers know as the
North and Matarias. with an open
view of the Atlantic. It is a much
healthier place than Jacksonville.
Jacksonville is located on the St
John river some twenty-live miles
from the ocean, consequently it is
surrounded by brackish water and
can't be healthy although it is a fine
looking place.
There are several Ilotry boys in
this couuty and every now and theu
I hear of some of them in Florida,
I love to know of Horry's fast improvements.
I would like for some
of the boys to come down and let me
show them some of the old Spanish 1
works when 1 tret back to the Land I
of Flowers.
There are a good many Indians in
South Florida where I was live years
ago, down on and in the greatest
swamp that is known in the South.
It is known as the Everglades. It
is about fifteen miles across and
seventy five miles in length. Criminals
often go to that place and they
come m'ghty near being hid after
entering it.
Mr. Editor, I am not taking vour
paper myself, but my brother is taking
it here and I have the pleasure
of reading it, and 1 enjoy reading
such a good paper from my old home.
V. I J. Todd.
[Friend, do as the other Horry
boys do when they leave their native
county, send your name and a dollar
and have the Herald follow you
wherever you may go. ? Hd.]
