80 the Old Folks Ray.
The old folks say, Tho times are
ohanglng,
The bygone years wore eurely
best;
O'er land and sea, for ever ranging,
Men wander now In vague unrest;
jLnd faded -are the green romances,
The morning light has died awav,
The world lias lost Its golden
chances!
So tlvo old folks say.
Tho old folks say, The days are
duller,
The sweetest songs are left unsung,
The spring was full of scent and
color,
Long, long ago, when wo were
> young.
Above our heads the slty was clearer, j
And warmer was the sunlight ray;
Yet Heaven 1r now a little nearer,
So tho old folks say.
Tho old folks Bay, 'Tts May time
weather,
Play, children, to your heart's doBiro,
But lenvc us hand In hand together,
Beside the swiftly falling fire.
For earthly chains are near their
breaking,
And eyes aro dim, and locks are
gray,
But Love's a dream that knows no
waking,
So the old folks say.
Hack to the Land.
I fully agree with economists wise
'Tis wrong In the city to hand;
Just find mo o spot where the
speckled trout bite,
And I will go back to tho land.
The florce cote petition debases tho
soul
And smother* all sentiments
grand;
'Just find me a spot with an oil well
or two,
And I will go back to tho land.
The smoke and tho struggle, the
rush and the noise
Prevent a philosophy bland;
Just find me a spot with a gold mine
beneath,
And I will go back to tho land.
I long for simplicity, q-uiot and hopo;
In proof of the same, understand,
Just find me tho spot where tho rainhows
touch earth,
And 1 will go back to the land.
?McLandburgh Wilson.
Blithe Heart.
I face the sun and cannot soo
My shadow on the grass;
Tho hours are all too sweet for me
To count them as they puss.
A little older day by day
I grow, but It 1b truth
That age has never found the way
To touch my heart's glad youth.
If I could live a thousand years
I should ho the boy
Taught early to forget the tears
And to hold fast to joy.
And if I read the world aright
While Journeying along,
God put us hero to find delight
In life and love and song.
The bird that sings, the bud that
blows
And I like, each one
Heeds not bow far the shadow goes
So long as shines the sun.

Cornish Wind.
-There is a wind in Cornwall that I
know
From any other wind because it
smells
Of the warm honey breath of
heather hells
And of the sea's salt; and these meet
and ilow
"With such sweet sa*or in such
sharpness met
That the astonished mmo to **
stasy
Tastes the ripe earth and the unvlntaged
sea.
Wind of Cornwall, wind, if I forget;
Not in the tunnelled streets where
scarce men breathe
The air they live by, hut wherever
seas
Blossom in foam, wher'ver merchant
bees
'Volubly traffic upon any heath;
If I forget, shame me I or if I find
A wind in England liko my Cornish
wind.
The Bast Survivor.
Twas tho last word of English
Deft blooming alone,
All its lovely companions
Were faded and gone.
' "For tho President's ukaso
' Had blighted the fruit,
' And h ad with or A<1 lu.nnnV,..
Destroyed every root. j
Words from Saxon and Norman
Were killed by the crime,
Leaving thlR solo survivor
Last darling of time.
Though the flowers of Shakespeare
Ilad vanished from view,
All alone In its glory
Still nourished "skiddoo"!
?McLandburgh Wilson.
A Problem,
While inuslng on the rights of niun
And wealth of nations,
I think upon niy boyhood plan;
No decorations
Bado me a doubtful claim assert
To legal tender;
1 needed Just my "pants," a shirt
And one suspender?
Why now do kings bewail the price
Of gilded splendor,
.And Croesus win with loaded dice
More legal tender?
Why does me envy of them hurt
When theso could render
iiy life content?Just "yanU,M a

Odd Hits of Hock. Which Puzzles the

In the mysterious Ice Age, when
groat glaciers advanced from the
North over the northern part of the
United States, many strange rocks
woro brought from tho regions of
the St. Lawrence and tho Qroat
Lakes and left far from their place
of origin, scattered among the hills
find plains of New England and the
Ohio and Mississippi Valleys.
One of these rocks, states an official
of tho Geological Survey, Is particularly
Interesting and curious. It
Is not more than a foot and a half In
diameter, hut It Is plainly a relic of
glaciul times, and nobody can tell
with certainty whence It oamo.
There Is no rock resembling it within
hundreds of miles. The supposition
is that tho Ice carried it from n
point north of Lake Huron to the
place whore is was found. Its composition
shows that It was of volcanic
origin.

Origin of "Cub."
Infant lions and bears aro now
generally spoken of as "cubs," but
in former times tho word "whelps"
would havo been used. Every edition
of tho English Bible front Wylif's
time to 1611 gives "whelp" for
tho young of the lion or bear. K
'ctili" meant originally, in English,
only a young fox. But by Shakespeare's
time it was possible to talk
of the "young stickling cubs" of a
she bear, and Waller even applied
"rub" to a young whalo, now known
as a "calf."
Panama's Death Date.

Country l.ifo in America, the death
rate was 112 per 1,000, and the

year of our occupancy, in a force of
12.000 men there were eight ueaths,
or two-thirds of a man to every
1,000. We have sent the death rate
down from 112 to 8 by vigilant sanitary
precautions.

Th? Old Ladle's Whisky Left an
Uncomfortable Aftertaste.
Dallas Welford, the English comedian
whose American success has
so phenomenal, described at the
Players' Club in New York the difficulties
that beset a provincial actor
trying to get on the London stage.
"All the great London managers,"
he said, 'say to you; 'If I could only
eo you act.' It Is rather mean of
them to say that, for you are In tho
presenco solely to get a chance to bo
soon acting, nnd you desire In your
disgust to play somo such trick on
them as tho painters played on tho
old lady; but you have the painters'
luck; and so you refrain.
"Once, In tho early summer, threo (
painters wero painting the Inside of ,
a house In the country. Toward tea
time those painters began to wish
for something to drink. Accordingly
they put their heads together and
tho result of their conference was
that their leader went to tho mlstresH
of the house nnd said:
" 'The frames of your oil paintings
aro very dingy, ma'am. We'll
clean them for you if you've got any
whisky.'
" 'How much whisky will lie neoded?'
the guileless old lady asked.
" 'About a quart, ma'am,' said tho
painter.
"So the old lady brought to tho
three painters a quart of whisky,
and they cleaned the picture frauioa
with water.
"On toward sunset the old lady,
coming to Inspect the frames, expressed
herself as delighted with
them.
" 'Oh,' she said, 'they look beautiful.
And who'd have thought a
quart of whisky would clean so
many? It was lucky I saved it. It
was what I washed Fido in last Sun
day.' "
