J. A. Lewis will begin his tour of
the county the first of January to
take tax returns. He will appreciate
it if you will meet him promptly at
the times and places named. This
will save him much trouble in getting
your returns later. He is the
authorized agent of the Herald while
on his trip, and he will gadly write

The Rev. John N, Jones, who has
been away from Horry for about
twenty-one-years, was in town one
day last week having been called to
his old home near Justice, S. C., by
the illness of his mother. Mr. Jones
is a member of the South Georgia
Methodist Conference and is a good
preacher.
The Rev. J. D Harrelson passed
through town last Monday having
closed a veiy successful revival at
B^ihlehamchurch, near Board Landit&f,
on Sunday night. There were
45 conversions, thirty-five of whom
were baptized on Sunday with fitting
ceremonies. Ten will receive the
ordiance later.
Complaints reach the office of bad
delivery of the Herald to its subscribers
on the San ford Star route.
The papers are not sent off from that
point very promptly it seems, and
the readers of the paper get it late.
The attention of the postmaster is
call tc this matter in the hope that
he will at once make a change and
send it off promptly.
Mr. Wyatt, of Kanawha Lumber

last week, was acoidently shot in the
shoulder, making a painful but not
dangerous wound, He was carrying

The Conway Fire Company hud
practice exercise last Friaa^r afternoon
at the reservoir recently finished
by the town on 4th Avenue, to
see how long the supply in the cistern
would last and how far the
water would be carried along the
street. The work was interesting
and everybody along the street stopped
to loiftv at it. The hose was
carried aloug Main street in front of
some of the principal buildings and
the water reached the buildings
from the middle of the street. Other
cisterns will be put in before long,
especially one at the old court
house near the town well. These
efforts of the town authorities and
the fire company to obtaio protection
against fire should be appreaciat
ed by the business men.

The many friends of Solicitor J,
Monroe Jolinson were painc'd to
hear of his death last Friday at tho
hospital in Baltimore whither he
had gone for treatment. News came
later that his funeral would take
place at Marion at 12 o'clock on Sunday.
Many people from Ilorry
county attended the services.
For eighteen years Mr. Johnson
was solicitor of the 4th Judicial circuit.

name of being the best prosecuting
oflicer in the State. He was not onl.y
skillful and successful as a criminal
lawyer, but the civil cases tried
in the various counties of his circuit
will boar ovidenco to his success
on the civil side of the court.
As solicitor ho attended the sessions
of the legislature to assist in the
engrossing department in the preparation
of bills. It is said that in
this he received very little help from
the other solicitors in the State.
Tho burden of preparing the bills
introduced from tho members from
the various counties fell on him and
he was always equal to the task,
The ovev work of lastsprir.g brought
on an attack of lagrippe, from which
it appears he never recovered. He
was not abl? to attend the fall term
of the court here and gradually
grew worse until he died at the hospital
last Friday.
His death struck tho hearts of
many peoDle in Horry with sadness.
He was so well learned in the criminal
law of the State that he was consulted
from far and wide. This
made him many friends, for ho was
always ready and willing to consult
and advise. His ability as a solicitor
cannot be duplicated today in
j this or any other circuit in the State.

recent visit to "Lakeside," the
silent city of tho dead, showed that
some at least are taking an interest
in improving its condition and in
improving its appearance, some of
the squares have been cleared of
debris, grass and weeds, old fences
have been removed and the mounds
beneath which sleep loved ones have
been tenderly cared for by loving
hands. In some places evergreen,
flowers and violets have been set
out recently, and the cemetery is
beginning to put on a more pleasing
look to* the eye. Let the good work
continue.

The crowd attending the afternoon
preformanco was estimated to be
between two and tliree thousand.
This is a large crowd for Conway.
The Sparks shows are not thclarg- s
est in the world, but it has the reputation
of having among the best
trained animals, feats of strength
and skill that cannot be beat, and
also the knack of carrying out their
program so that no one loses interest
and there is a snap about it
that pleases. J
There were two performances, c
one at 2 o'clock in the afternoon and (
another at hight. The crowd at tend- t
ing at night was about as large and
perhaps larger than in the day.
The perfomers all proved that they 11
are anions the best of their various (
kinds, but the great attraction of ^
this feature of the show is Marie .
Valentino, who is said to lie but 11
years of ago. Her 'balancing feats

for which this meeting was be

detail the plan which he had evolved
to raise the necessary funds?the
main scheme being embodied in his

house at a cost of $25,000, a jail for

"The bonds have already been
sold and the funds in handsofcounty
treasurer; and the funds for old lot

of a short time. Of this amount I
|estimate that $5,000 or $0,000 will
build the one at Conway, $2,000 at
Star 131 uIT, and $2,000 for our pare of
the one across 1 Lie Ceo Dee. Thus
you see, gentlemen, wo have the
funds already provided as far as our
county is concerned. All that remains
is for Marion to furnish her
part, and you people to furnish the
proper location. With this done I
will guarantee the bridge. Indeed
I regard it a certainty, and no longer
problematic on this side.
"So far as the location is concorned,
I pe"sume that I am not expected
to take partisan sides in the
matter. The merits of the site will
locate the bridge, and that is all that
you could ask,
Mr. J. A. MeDerinott assured the
Marionitos that if they would work
the matter up on their side of river
and do their part that Horry would
surely do hers.
On motion of Mr. II. L. Buck uti
organization was formed with \V. J.
Hendricks as chairman and W. C.
Jordan as secretary for the purpose
of working up the bridge matter.
The following resolution was read
and adopted. "Resolved that it is
the sense of this meeting that the
bridge he located at Rotato Heel Ferry,
Meeting ajourned subject to the
call of tho chairman.
