was startled to realize tbat the embankments,
breakwater and large pier
were settling.
The breakwater Just in front of
the main building has completely disappeared
and there is now over 50
feet of water, where only prior to the
giving way of the heavy rooks there
was three feet above the high water
mark. The large wharf in front of
the building settled until the water
would not let it settle and Captain
Pough says this morning there is
orer 60 feet of water whore generally
there was about eight to ten f :et on
an average high tide.
Captain Pough oallod his men out,
and thoy move everything they
oould out of the station, for fear they
would all be shallowed up. He says
the main building Is all Intaot now
but in a dangerous position. lie lost
all his wood for the winter tbat was
piled along the breakwater. He says
there was no shock or anything to attract
his attention except the gradual
settling of the earth, lie says there are
large cracks running on the hills now.
The disturbance lasted fully forty
minutes, the foundation around the
ea^t end of the building has settled
about five feet. The citizens here
think it WAS caused by the gradual
heavy current settling against that1
point of the beaon and bad cut a sub- i
terrsnian channel under tbe breakwater
and beach.

Three Men Killed bj Hear End Collision
on Southern.
Three killed and seveaal iDjured resulted
from a terrible wreok which occurred
on the main line of the Southern
railway, about 300 yards from the
station in Danville, Va., at an early
hour Saturday morning.
The dead are:
Engineer G O. Kinney, of No 34,
a fast* passenger train from Jacksonville
to the Dorth.
Flagman O. J. Mull, of through
freight train No. 84.
An unknown man, whose bcdy was
burned and mangled beyond all reooguitlon.
The wreok resulted from a rear-end
collision similar to the one in whioh
President Spencer, of the Southern
ra'lway, lost his life Boaroely more
than a weak ago and not two hours'
ride from the scene of the present disaster.

old daughter of Mr. A, L. Oogglns,

afternoon by her twin brother, Wm.
R. Oogglns. Herman Smith, a nineyear-old

W. A. Gulna, a prominent attorney
and hotel owner living at MoOays,

examination of surrounding premises
was made by offioers and tracks were

Senator Tillman prizes this letter
and bill of ante-bellum days very
highly. He stated that he would have
his secretary plaoo the bill in a soiap
book for preservation. Although the
bill "represents nothing on God's
green earth, nor aught in the waters
oelow," it oomes from an old soldier
who is In sympathy with Mr. Tillman
and his views on the race problem,
