A Daring Waap.
Borne wasps live In part upon honey,
which they collect from the most open
petaled flowers, and thus to a very
moderate extent tliey may be regarded
In the light of flower fertilizers. Klrkland
says In the llrst volume of the
American Naturalist that "the paper
hornet (Vespa maculnta) often enters
my nucleus hives when 1 am rearing
Italian queen bees and captures the
young queen In the midst of her little
colony, usually just after she has commenced
her flrst laying. I have seen
this depredator enter the small hive,
drag out the queen and fly away with
her to tho woods" (page 52). Borne of
the species of the genus pollstes store
up honey which Is poisonous, from the
fact that It 1ms been collected from
poisonous flowers. They are found In
Bouth America, where also species of
the genus chartergus occur?wasps
that ninko a very remarkable and
tough nest, with funnel shaped combs
inside, arranged one inside of another,
nest fashion, but not in contact except
at their points of suspension. At
the apexes of these cones occur the
apertures of entrance for the Inmates
to pass up among the conical tiers.
Stcerlnu Ship.
The work of steering a great ship,
even with the aid of modern machinery.
Is much more delicate than one
would imagine. The larger and faster
ihe ship the greater is the difficulty.
It is not enough to hold the wheel In
the same position to keep the ship on
her course, for the wind and wavos
and the currents of the ocean tend
constantly to knock the ship off her
course. The great wall of steel (for
the hull may be 700 feet long and sixty
feet high) offers a broad target for
the wind and waves. The art in steering
is to humor the ship to these forces
and when she Is deflected lning her
back quickly to her course. If you
could watch the binnacle, especially
lxi bad weather, you would see the
needle of the compass constantly shift
lng from side to side, which moans
thrt the groat stool prow Is not going
forward in a perfectly straight line.?

A professional runner gives the following
suggestions for exercise: ltlso
at 0:30 a. in. Put on old clothing, easy
shoes and a sweater. Time for dress|
Ing, Ave minutes. Walk one-fourth of
a mile; time, five minutes. Then run i
a mile at a dog trot in eight minutes,
arranging your circuit of a mile and
a quarter so that you will finish at
your door thirteen minutes after starting.
That exercise will expand your
lungs and stimulate your heart action
and land you at your doorstep at 0:48
a. m. panting for breath, thoroughly
exhausted and perspiring at every pore.
You are then ready for your bath and
sliave and breakfast and for the natural
routine of the day. The man of
sedentary habits who patiently pursues
this exercise may kiss all drugs
goodby.

A wise clerk guve him "The Vicar of
Wakefield." He carefully translated It
Into Gerihan and put his work awuy
for six weeks. At the end of that tlmo
he translated his translation back Into
English and then made a searching
comparison between his version and
that of Goldsmith's original. "After
that," he said, "I knew English."

Tho German 1 and Yon.
It is surprising when any one tukes
t lie trouble to notice how many letters
beglu with the pronoun "I." To Germans
this Is egotistical, and their etiquette
in letter writing forbids It. It
Is probably on the same principle that
they write I (ich) always with a small
letter and you (Sle) with a capital, reversing
the English custom.
