There's comfort to begotten out of
almost any old subject, even if it
is worn threadbare. A few years I
a go who would have thought that
so much interest would have centered
around the ragged edge of
an old tin can as there now i>? In
modern times the ancient Mohammendan
saying, 4'all eyes are turned
tow ard Nh$<Jba," h as been changed,
to mean, all eyes are turned toward j
the tin can," because this erstwhile !
active agen t of the graveyard has i
by Act of Congress, become a
thing of beauty and a joy forever.
The old tin can is now the quaintessence
of purity and stands for honesty
and for truth. tf Knighthood
should ever be in -flower again who
knowns but what some chivalrous
Knight as he goes forih to do battle
for the cause of truth and honor
will have emblazoned on his escutcheon
in burnished gold, studed with
diamonds and pearls and rubies and
other costly gems, an old tin can.
What glory it would be to go down
in history and known to fame as the
Knight of the Old Tin Can. Sueh
indeed, would be glory enough to
light for, to b'eed for and to die for.
The wrongs of a captive lady confined
in the dark, clamy, cold dungeon
of the castle prison of a revengeful
hated and rejected suitor,
or crul uncle whose purpose it is to
ob her of her riches, pales into utter
insignificance when compared
witli the halo of glory which hangs
around the classic outlines of the
subject of this short article. Congress
of the greatest a.?^ most pow- ;
erful nation 011 earth, has at last
recognized the merits of and claims
for free advertising of the tin can. *
Ry au Act it requires that all tins
containing articles of food shall
have printed on the label exactly <
what the contentes of the can is. No '<
longer will we be served buzzards !
for boneless turkey, old worn out '
diseased mules and horses for roast 1
beaf, the dirty Moor scrapings and >
offals of the packing house for pot-- <
ted ham, sturgeon for ColumbiaRiv- 3
er salmon, the packer's wife for Vi- *
enna sausage, and so on and- so
forth. This pure food law is a good
one and if honestly and rigorously
enforced by the Federal authorities,
which doubtless it will te, one can
eat canned goods with a great deal '
more relish and satisfaction than 1
they now do because the guarantee:'
of the government insuring the'1
purity of the food and it is what it is J
represented. There will bo a sense k
of relief born of the confidence in- 1
spired by the watchfulness of the y
National government in protecting '
the health of the consumer and one '
will no longer be hauuted with the (
fear that sickness, the result of im j J
pure food, is constantly knoc king at '
his dining room door, and that open *
graves awaits him and his loved J
ones in the silent city of the dead. *
And this brings us back to the first
proposition that, there's comfort to
be gotten out almost any old subject.
