From the fact that some of the farmers have already held a meeting at the court house as published in our last issue, and are determined to make certain demands of those running for the ollice. shows that the farmers as a class are more and more learning the benefits of organization. As a class farmers organize less than any other. It has been truly said that to eet the farmers of the country together on any one thine is one of the hardest things ever attempted. This is about tb? truth, as it has been itt past experience. lint the farmers, like other people, are fasl learning methods whereby their interests may be brought together and whereby concerted action may be taken for mutual benefit of all of them as a class. Ill ?1iii l.nl Inn ....,.~,-t .it... - f ill 1.111/ V VUIUII illMH lill llll . Mlllll" t>I the fanners of the South have not siucl< to it as they ought, ami the organization has never been, as complete as it could and ought to have been. But the effects on the price of cotton following the action taken by the farmers in forming the cotton association, are enough to show them just what it is possible for them to do along this line. May they be quick to learn the lessons taught, and may they perfect their cotton association and other organizations for their mutual benefit and upbuilding of their interests, until they are placed on a firm footing with other classes of men, It is u fact that Conway is one of the healthiest places in the world. Long years ago, people came to Conway from distant points for their health alone. So far in her history Conway can certainly boast of having good health. There arc people who cannot be well any where, neither on the mountains nor on the sea, do they seem to find that sturdy health that they :ind in others. There has been some sickness in Conway, of course, but there has been sickness at any place on earth that you might mention. We are speaking of the general rule when we say that Conway is a healthy place and deserves to have the reputation of a healthy place. Then why, you may ask, is it that some people invariably leave Conway to spend the summer, at least a month or two of the warm season? If they leave for health, it would appear that they have a mistaken idea about Conway, if .the statements above are true. Those who remain so far as we have been able to determine, and wo have certainly made a few observations, enjoy just as good healtli as those who go. The only case of typhoid fever that we remember in Conway during the last live or six years was one contracted by a person elsewhere and just got here in time to be taken sick at the hotel. Those who leave Conway in the summer must leave in the purspit of pleasure elsewhere and not because they have any real reason to think the town is not a healthy place to live during the summer months. Horry county has within her conlines some as fertile lands as you can find in any county in the State. But their fertility will remain unknown to most, of the world with out a railroad through the county from east to west, giving an outlet j for their products to the world. Such a railroad would do much in the great development of this county. The county almost had it once, or it was thought so, when the Conway, Coast and Western was being first extended. But the extension was stop]K)d short and did not even reach the county boundary line. do in somethings, Wo are afraid the farmers of I lorry county arc somewhat inclined to discontinue the practice of diversifying their money crop. It is said that the acreage planted in tobacco this year is considerably smaller than it has been since the farmers went to raising the weed. The low prices of cotton several years ai^* taught the farmers that they must resort to other crops for making money and that bv planting some of several money crops, they would not over supply the market with anv of them, and they would consequently jJjet a ??ood price for all they Ii.nl to soil. For the past your or two cotton lius boon brinyin^ fair prions, anil tliis is what has caused llio farin'M's to ?piit planting tobacco i to some extent and to turn to the ! old crop a?juin. Ilut this turning back to eotton alone is a bad thino for the farmers and they will not continue lone before they will find i t Oil t. Judoino by an article appearing in the Columbia State of a few days iijjii. from a correspondent tit Conway. it would ppear that the votinp" out of the dispensary in 1 lorry has little or no effect in makinp conditions better at Conway. The article states somelhin^ abou t t he juo trade, ttnd it hardly states it us bail as it for any one who will take t he t rouble to investigate will be surprised til the immense quantity of liijuor handled here and alonp the railroad line in the county by the express company. There has been a ease or two in the Mayor's court against blind timers and the severe penal t,v of the law has been applied, but it appears by reading the article men tinned, and from other sources of infoi lation, that the illicit selling of whiskey is going on here just the same and under circumstances that are indeed daring. The Court House Commissioners have advertised for bids for the work and we take it that it will be but a short time before the ground will be broken for the foundations. The Commission may go slow for awhile, but they will thereby be less liable to make mistakes. Death of an Infant. Special to the State. Clara HI lis. the one-year-old |daughter of L>rof, and Mrs J.
