so much interested in the matter of
tlie opposition to Senator Tillman,
the editor of the Kurt Mills Times
hits the spot pretty well according
to our way of thinking. Wo have
not the slightest idea who wrote the
article that the Times so t.imolv .
criticises, hut whoever "Disinterested
Citizen may be, his views will
certainly be in 1 ho small minority
in this matter. Considering the
national reputation that Tillman has
made for himself in the United
States Senate, in fact working his
way to a position in that body that
no other man can fill, it is the duty
of those who have any pride in their
State to retain him as their representative
there. Tiilman as Governor
of South Csrolina some years ago
and Tillman in the Senate now are
two quite different things, and no
matter how much prejudice and dislike
a man may have had for him at
the former time, it is no good if round
for wishing to oust him from a place
that he has won by real merit and
brains. It is South Carolina and
not Tillman really that is at stake
here, and there is not a voter who
should not be able to see and understand.
In various States of llic Union the |
Legislatures are passing laws under
which it is possible to punish those
who get together and form gigantic
trusts for the purpose of destroying
competition and running up the
price of every day necessaries up
beyond a reasonable limit. The
other day some rich manufactureres
of ice who got together and put up
the price of ice were lined by the
Judge before whom they were tried
in the sum of live thousand dollars
each and a term each in the State
prison at hard labor. Thcv are
after the Standard Oil company with
vigor now and this concern s!,*nild
catch it hard and heavy. T1 is
the way to create confidence in
government and help to put d<?>?

For sometime past the owners of
the Atlantic Coast Line system have
had their eyes turned toward
Conway one way or another,
and a few days ago thev were
down to inspect tl to Conway,
Coast and Western branch with a
view to accepting that as an addition
to their trackage in Horry county.
While they have been coming
here in their special cars they have
let drop certain hints leading to the
belief that they had something in
store for Conway in the near future.
Just what it is or was however that
they had in mind they have taken
good care to keep a profound secret.
Hut time passes and time continues
to pass and there is nothing more
said and nothing more done, II may
all wind up in nothing in the end but
we arc hoping not.
Conway is progressing. It- has
a fertile back country from which to

just to say that what progress we
are making is being foreed upon us

This is not the way it should be, for
the citizens of a town should get
together and tiring about results
that otherwise would not come.
This is the season of the year when
the human system requires but little
food to sustain, it and the eating of
meats and highly seasoned foods is
sure lobe followed by sickness. In
the winter much food is required to

tobacco industry than she does, and
if some energy can be put forth in
the right direction in this matter,
less tobacco would go to points outside
of the county to be sold.

year, it is going to be hard for some
people to make a choice.

Now as whiskey is the first issue
in my candidacy as a member of
the House of Representatives, I
will say to the people whose suffrage
I am seeking that 1 favor the
dispensary run in incorporated towns
only. As we can't have prohibition
I think we should put whiskey in
easy reach of the people, so that
those who want it and will have it
may get it, lawfully in a right and
decent way and that wo give them
good liquor at a reasonable price.
1 think that a dispensary run right
will decrease drunkenness and teach

My plan is to elect our county dispenser
by the people, and that the
Supervisor and the Mayor with one
man appointed by the Governor be
the county board and the whiskey
he purchased under the Kasor-Manning
bill, which will prevent all
graft, and that the State Board be
deprived of all power save that of
auditing the books, keeping track
<of the business, etc., and that the
next Legislature fix a law making it
graft proof from such dirty things
that has been brought to light. I
think that lforry should have one at
Conway, if the county is tohaveone
at all any other places where they
